No. The can-opener approach to accessing the wiring does not set the alarm off.

I am a massive JLR product fan, I have owned loads of them and still own two.

But having waited half a year for parts, had attempted thefts (CANBUS), had one fully failed engine, one suspected failed engine, 2.5k a year insurance, 1.5k a year warranty (on each car!) and received nothing but a terrible attitude from JLR HQ employees and dealers, I think I am finally weaning myself off.

Hmm, perhaps it’s time to revert to 1990s-type alarms – ie, the type triggered by a sudden gust of mouse flatulence?

Again, context is everything. Where were your RRS kept overnight?
All my cars have been kept on the drive
Visible from the road? Behind a locked gate? On a Hebridean island?

For street-parked cars, fair point.
But for your car(s) parked on your driveway, when you’re at home…

Wouldn’t the above trigger the alarm, or is it disabled before surgery?
confused
There are also devices which can start the engine (and code new keys) even if the alarm is active, I’m not sure there’s anything with OE security that’s genuinely safe.

Car theft was absolutely nuts when i first started driving. It was common to take something vital off the engine and take it with you if you were going to be leaving the car for a while. hehe

Something pocketable like a rotor arm or an HT lead.

I dont know if something so conveniently removable exists on modern cars?

Well the SDV6 oil filter is easily accessible up top... should maybe just take/loosen that off... they'll not get far laugh

I’d rather they take my car off the drive than come in my house for the keys, whilst my kids are sleeping. There’s also an increase in car crime due to covid and the war. Parts are even more valuable and have been on back order for ages. This is causing an increase in demand for such vehicles/parts. I worked at a JLR dealership for 8 years until recently. You hear some nasty stories. Believe me, you’d rather they just take the car this way.
Absolute nonsense.

Do you think only the thieves only want Range Rovers? If not, why aren't they taking just as many Porsches and Mercedes?

The obvious answer is because they're opportunists and are balancing risk and reward, just like any other human and its currently far too easy to steal a RR.
I’m not saying it’s the only reason, I’m saying it’s contributed. I part own a Hyundai dealer now and had 5 CATS taken from cars on the pitch in one night last year. The cost of precious metals and parts are part of the reason for the increased demand. My wife has a Porsche Macan S and the Porsche retailer are in a similier position with customer cars being taken.

I'd suggest something like a uniquely cut piece of small metal that has to be physically inserted into the vehicle before allowing ignition.

I'm a bit weird though.
Go watch LockPickingLawyer on YouTube and realise why this doesn't solve much.
Can he pick immobilisers too then?
Immobilisers.

These confuse me. My old Vespa got nicked without the key but it had an immobiliser.

No help at all and even worse when I got it back as it wouldn't start until a new expensive ECU was fitted.

So just another OEM product that's more of a pain to the owner than to the thieves.

JLR fixing this is like turkeys voting for Christmas. Are we supposed to be grateful to them ? £10m ? Come on.

My boss had an Evoque that kept cutting out, not ideal when on the motorway with his family. Ended up getting a new engine under warranty.

He got rid of that and despite the problems, promptly ordered a new Disco. Heard him on the phone to his insurer last week, astonished that his premium was going to be £8,000.

Clearly a glutton for punishment!

Was it something like 65k vehicles benefiting from this = ~ £154 per vehicle? So it would have been a lot cheaper to have built the security into the vehicle in the first place - but #headinsand #tightasfk, and people finding their LRs uninsurable have forced this.

Presumably your Vespa was picked up and put into the back of a van?

I'm not sure of the point of including an engine mobiliser on something that can be picked up by two blokes and carried away.

Different story on 3 tonne car though.

Maintaining the thread I hope, Interesting that JLR have suddenly woken up to the fact at last that their RR's are being regularly stolen.

We have my RR Autobiography on our Security Camera System being "Nicked" probably to order in mid morning direct sunlight, not off the drive at home at 3:00 in the morning but from the Car Park directly outside of my office whilst I was no more than 40 mtrs away from it with my keys, (well, "the JLR novelty "keyless" crap electronic things!) still in my pocket.

The bare face cheek of these scroats and sheer nerve is unbelievable! Security Camera clearly shows this arse**le standing directly along side of my vehicle, with his "gadget", probably 50 quid off eBay or the dark web then no more than 10 seconds and he's inside, 5 seconds to get over the tunnel, start it up and away up the road in no more than 20/25 seconds flat and 70 grands worth of my motor is away!!

If there is any saving grace to the story, the tracker kicked in (Securicor/Vodaphone) not JLR sh*t, via an immediate report to the Old Bill and it was located within half an hour with only minimal damage, well if you can call a grand to repaint the complete drivers side minimal anyway but definitely not worth an insurance claim which those fu**ers at AXA would have back plus 200% mark up upon my renewal!

Further to the story; went to collect it from the Police Guys, quite impressed here though, one car appeared armed response (must have been local and heard the shout!) the others were "Jam Sandwich Traffic" not always a great fan of the Old Bill (a few SP30/50 points etc over the years) but these lads were certainly very friendly (Jokes about Range Rovers etc, "5 this week so far and its only Tuesday"!!) but my offer to leave it where it was, hidden behind some local shops so that these scroats not knowing that it was tracked, that subsequently, when they returned to "collect it" after a couple of days would have taken "The Bill" directly to their chop shop, an absolute "open goal" for them, an easy "collar", another crime clear up and probably, more stolen vehicles being identified however, they declined my offer, "too busy, not enough manpower for the surveillance etc,, makes me wonder what we pay our taxes for ...

Anyway, sold on now for an RS6, just have to see how long this bu**er lasts ...
