I run a BMW 635CSI which has its original wheels. I need a set of 4 new tyres as mine are not far from finished. The problem is the size. they are 220/55/390 and i don't seem to be able to find any anywhere.

Are there any other sizes that i could safely put on them? There is nothing i can do about the rim size (390) but is there anything i can do about the width (220) or aspect ratio (55)?

This is kind of the problem... they don't even make new ones any more! Hence when searching fleabay etc my choices are somewhat limited!

So in order to widen the field, is it possible to use any slightly different width/aspect ratio tyres i could use? (changing in pairs naturally of course!)

Buy some non metric wheels? That way loads of choice of suitable tyres. But don't go fitting non metric tyres to metric rims.

Easily the cheapest/best option. Metric wheels were a bit of a fad that never caught on, even when they were current, the tyres were hideously expensive. Buy some proper 15/16inch wheels from a similar model.

Best suggestion.

There's only three tyres I think you can get in such a size, Michelin TRX, TRX GT or Dunlop TD Sports, the latter of which were still available new from Micheldever Tyres when I bought a pair of rears about 18 months ago for £130-ish each.

TRX GTs were available from a place in Southampton at £329+ VAT per corner and were the only place in the country I managed to track down any that hadn't been on a car previously.

If it's a show car, then a set of original wheels and tyres would be an asset at show time, but for any other use, I'd suggest finding some other period BMW cross spokes with the correct stud pattern, hub size and equivalent rolling radius.

There are millions of those out there and you'll pick up a good set of boggo X-spokes for £100 or less - just ensure they come with the right centre caps - they're harder to come by.
