New SRT Viper teaser

The official unveiling of the new Viper is just a day away and, to keep our appetites whetted, another teaser picture has been released

After countless 'leaked' images of interior details, a head-on silhouette of the new Viper and a Hot Wheels toy, this latest picture of the new SRT 'don't call it a Dodge' Viper shows just enough to keep us intrigued ahead of its New York show debut.

New Viper as Hot Wheels toy

The new car is no longer badged a Dodge; instead it's become an 'SRT' and will be Chrysler's 'global muscle car'. Which means that, for the first time, the Viper is designed to perform well on roads outside the US, so expect an extra degree of refinement and even electronic driver aids.

However, this Yank brute has hardly gone soft; details are scarce, but rumours are fairly firm that a full-fat 8.7-litre V10 with around 600hp is hiding beneath the hood (or bonnet, to folk this side of the pond). For a general idea of what performance to expect, take a look at this onboard lap of the 'ring in a tweaked version of the previous Viper.

But if you can't wait for - can't afford - the new Viper, and you're aching for your own slice of American Pie, then check out the handful of past Vipers in our classifieds.

There is a higher res pic of the toy on the internet, I'm fairly sure this made an appearance on the last thread about the new Viper.

"Full-fat" always makes me think that the engines are being squeezed out of a cow.

Also they make me think that I'm not the only person who uses lazy cliches, which is quite comforting.

SRT is a daft name. Reminds me of HRT. What was wrong with Dodge?
I wonder if Ferrari have helped with some of the engineering given that Fiat, Chysler's owner, owns 85%.

How DO they manage to achieve 68ish bhp per litre? Are the horses Shetland Ponies? Anybody? That engine can't surely be classed as 'high performance', unless by the same perverse reasoning you class a McDonalds meal as a full meal?!?!

It's called tuning for performance and reliablity, it will produce its power all day, every day and twice on Sunday, without breaking sweat.

Sure it can, just because it doesn't have to rev its nads off to produce power, like small engines do, doesn't mean it's not high performance.

Producing power is all about getting in as much air as possible so you can burn more fuel. The more fuel you can burn at stoich, the more power you will produce. You can either get a big naturally aspirated engine, or smaller engines that have forced induction or that are engineered to rev higher.

What was the last one, some 500bhp - sounds "high performance enough to me". Also, I remember reading in EVO that the last version made 90% of it's peak torque from 1800rpm or something ridiculous. Not exactly my favourite kind of engine as I prefer high revving screamers (though I do really love Vipers!), but they are seriously quick cars.

Exactly. Very handy if you want to tow a powerboat. smile

It was 600bhp, so I expect this to pump out at least 650bhp, especially considering the Corvette ZR-1 had 638bhp, I'd imagine the upcoming replacement for that car will have an even higher output.

650 hp could be obtained with the Gen IV Viper via exhaust and SRT ECU. The Gen V Viper is supposed to take advantage of some Fiat's intake technology. The new Viper should hit 650 hp easily if they are still using the V10. Remember that has not been truly confirmed.
