I don't want this to be a moan at the police as I do think they do a fine job, but why oh why do some police cars bait other road users?!?

I was driving back from a comedy gig last night with my wife, on a 50mph dual carraigeway with working average speed cameras and this moron came HOONING up behind me. I was in the left hand lane and there were no other cars around. Rather than moving out past me, he (or she) sat so close to my rear bumper that I couldn't see the headlights!

I ignored it and stuck my cruise-control on, but this continued for a good 5 minutes before the numpty turned off. Now I'm not one to raise to bait, but I don't like any car sitting so close behind me. Not only this, but he was backing off, then accelerating up behind me again, almost as if to bait me to speed up.

Then to my surprise, as he took the next exit, I saw that it was a police car!!

If I'd have done that to another road user, I'd have been stopped for sure. I didn't get the plate, but would have reported it if I did.

REALLY winds me up!!

In my younger less experienced days this happened to me, more or less as you describe.

I sped up (not excessively) and got pulled. It didn't go any further than a talking to but the copper was throwing his weight about and I thought having some fun at my expense.

This happened to me and I foolishly booted it in frustration. He pulled me over some time later to tell me I was speeding. In my defence I told him that he was driving too close and that slowing to allow him to overtake didn't prompt him to go past, so it was essentially entrapment. The conversation wasn't going too well until I pointed out that I had recorded everything on my rear facing Go Pro...which was actually off.

To be honest, if there hadn't been average speed cameras I probably would have "toe'd it a bit" just to get away, even though it goes against every grain in my body to do so. I hate rising to bait but I also hate having someone sitting dangerously close to me.....

I often wonder who polices the police drivers.

I commute on the A14 joining from the A11. I gave up keeping count how many times i was tailgaited by the plod (dangerously in my mind) or following the filth (I have NO love for them) where they speed, change lane and exit the dual carriageway all without touching their indicators.

If any of them read this.

LEAD BY EXAMPLE, NOT bait drivers into an easy way of boosting your figures!

In my case, and when it's an unmarked car, I'm not going to tolerate someone putting me or my passengers in danger by driving too close.

The A11/A14 junction does something strange to most motorists, very peculuar stretch of road!

If someone (police or otherwise) is tailgating then ease off the accelerator and slow down bit by bit.

Speeding up (well over the limit) will just result in a pull.

And if they continue to follow as in my case?

Carry on slowing down until you stop and ask them if there is a problem? smile

They'll do you for stopping on a clearway. wink

If you're in a biggish car, especially one with cruise control, it seems easy to sit at a steady speed and ignore others. Same as in roadworks on the motorway. It's somehow much more intimidating if you're driving a smaller car and someone is up your arse.

This happens frequently on the M5. As a regular user I've learned what cars they use to plant in your mirror to egg you on.

Sadly this method does get them numerous customers.

This - its the safest way to deal with the situation as you are reducing the speed to match the very small stopping distance of the car behind. They will either get bored and pass when the speed drops very low or look very stupid when you become stationary and pop the hazard lights on.

I agree, but it my case I was followed for 4 miles and slowing down is a total inconvenience if you're trying to get somewhere.

Also, how many people would really slow down to a stop when someone is driving aggressively behind them? I didn't know it was a police car, and I sure wouldn't stop to put myself into a confrontation position.

Front and rear view cam. Then forward the footage to the local Police Chief Constable.

had this not so long ago in me R32, car came up behind me fast (i was in lane 1 at the speed limit amazingly, lane 2 was empty) then literally glued itself 6 inches from my bumper, couldn't even see its lights ... as it tried to goad me into nailing it

then eventually they got bored and pulled past in uniform in an unmarked car ...

Wait until they get REALLY close then do an EMERGENCY stop.

When it gets to court say you stopped to avoid a dog/cat/rabbit in the road.

And then sue them for whiplash injuries etc.

Funnily enough, this is pretty widespread, it has happened to me too.

After the officer 'heard' me driving too fast down the high street, no less.

I'm glad I was able to tell it was a Panda car because like many others state, I would otherwise have assumed I was being followed by some kind of Vauxhall Vectra driving lunatic and tried to avoid them. I proceeded at a modest pace and eventually they got bored and pulled me over.

Playing devils' advocate though, I'm sure they do catch irresponsible drivers ocassionally too, which I am in favour of.
