Coming into the drive this afternoon I was unluckily walking behind my brothers car (above) as he started it, throwing a rather large, smelly cloud of smoke from the exhaust as it started....

When asking him if he had noticed it before he says not, and assures me that the car drives the same as always....

What is the likely cause of the smoke cloud (clears and runs clean after 5 secs or so) and is it likely to cause any long term hassle - he doesn't care much for his cars (generally neglected) although i have warned him to watch the oil levels etc...

Last thing he needs at the moment is it to break as it handed him a 4 figure repair bill in the late summer for a a few new ECU's (including main one), service, MOT etc.

Its a 2006 car with about 80k miles.

If it were a petrol I'd put money on valve stem seals. Does it chuff after a minute or so at idle, even when hot?
Has it got a turbo? Could be oil seeping into that through worn seals maybe.

Blue smoke indicates that the engine is burning oil. The source of the oil is harder to diagnose but likely to be the turbo. Some oil getting past the seals is normal and it can accumulate in the intercooler/intake pipes and get in through the intake. If it doesn't smoke during driving I wouldn't be too concerned but something to keep an eye on. Make sure he services it and maintains the oil level.

Possible on the turbo, I'll try and give it a visual check tomorrow.

Its the 1.6 (90bhp) turbo diesel....

Probably rings or turbo seals, black smoke would be fairly normal, blue = oil burning and/or getting past something.

Turbo failures on these are common and if not replaced properly with new feed pipe, pump strainer banjo bolts(with strainer removed) and possibly a new oil pump then a new one will fail rapidly.

I have seen one on a focus last 10 miles because the turbo was replaced without the above also being done and a Picasso about 60 miles because the feed pipe banjo was not removed and had not had the strainer picked out of it.
They are designed to run hotter than usual and really require much more regular oil changes, around 5-6000 miles is recommended.

Wow.....

I did advise him not to get one but of corse never get listened to.......guess it would be good to p/x away (although likely only worth £2k tops) and it smarts a bit after recently spending about that on it....

At least something has come out of this. You can tell your mate that 'you told him so', with regard to maintaining it properly.
