Didn't used to be a legal requirement, my mum's 1973 car had black ones with "press" written on them.

my first ever car had a sort of locking lever you pressed down on to the seat belt to hold it into place and a square red button to release the lever.
Saab 99s and Ladas had this.
I had a Lada.
1600 ES on Weber carbs if that saves me?

no, didn't think so

Been a while since I've seen "Press" confused

Along similar lines: motorcycle helmet D-rings (red tab), buckles (red button) and flip-up chinpiece releases (red buttons). Another legal necessity?

Must be just some of the cars I've had, but I'm sure they all had it.

Related but not answering your question - red is a very high visual acuity colour - your eyes respond well to red even in low light, which is why it is used as a warning or emergency colour.
