What's the modern day Fiat Coupe?
Discussion
18 months ago I purchased a very cheap Fiat Coupe off a friend of the family. I didn't really know a lot about them and initially was thinking about flogging it on. As it turned out I really enjoyed driving it, comfortable, made a great noise, pretty quick and it looked (and was) a bit different to everything else.
As expected of course I've had a few problems with it, it's a 16 year old Fiat after all! They're starting to stack up a bit now and with a new kid on the way I'm starting to wonder about something a bit newer and hopefully more reliable.
Thing is I still want the same type of car, SWMBOs got a Fiesta so I don't need something sensible.
Under £6k
2+2
Comfortable GT/Sport type car
Bit different/interesting
Good engine that makes a great noise
Not so fussed about amazing handling, I've got a proper Mini for that!
Not made of cheese
What are your suggestions chaps and chapesses?
RX8?
350Z?
Alfa GT V6?
What else?

^ A DC5 costs more than £6k.
Sadly there aren't a huge number of coupes that are significantly more modern than the Fiat other than those you listed.
There is of course the TT but the rear seats are for small kids only, the Hyundai coupe offers a V6 an decent spec and from what I understand aren't bad steers.
Or go old school and find the best condition 944 for £6k?

Is a Monaro too silly a suggestion? Autotrader suggests they start at slightly above £6k
SC430 - depending on how serious the +2 requirement is!
Struggling to think of slightly "unusual". I have an Accord Coupe V6. They carried on until 02 and are great - FWD and slushmatic may not appeal, but you'd only have to spend less than £2k of your budget.

On what grounds? Interested to know as I quite like these and was thinking about getting one. Which of his criteria does it not meet?
I assume the requirement for a 2+2 rules the 2-seater 350Z out?The Alfa GT was the first one I thought of, good looks, great V6 engine. Anyone know much about them? The RX8 is interesting too but they've got to be so cheap for a reason. I'm afraid the Hyundai just doesn't do it for me and neither does the TT.
Glad it's not just me that found it a difficult "What car" to answer! If I take away the 2+2 requirement any other suggestions?
What engine did your coupe have? Ive had 3 20v Turbos and havent really found anything that really feels as special as them at the price. However I will agree with the Alfa GT. Always thought they were great looking cars and am looking for one soon to replace my competent but definately not unique feeling CLK.
Think a bit older and go for a Corrado VR6. The best unmolested late (95/96) ones can be had for upwards of £3k. With a £6k budget you would be looking at the very best low mileage cosseted example. Get a good one and it will be perfectly reliable. The standard car sounds awesome, add a performance stainless exhaust and a BMC Carbon Induction kit for race car aural stimulation. I have tried lots of different Sports/Coupes/Convertibles, but always come back to the VR Corrado.
They are an uber rare sight on the road due largely to being prohibitively expensive new and the age of them many have been written off by unsympathetic owners theough poor driving, lack of maintenance or both! They are good for nigh on 150 mph and are very quick through the gears on the move.. For a front driver the handling and balance are very good. Practical, with a very decent boot and true 4 seater ability. The main negative for me are that very few came with AirCon, it was an expensive dealer fit option.
Aside from this my money would probably go on a 1999 E36 BMW M3 or a late Porsche 944 S2. Perfectly useable if you have access to another car. Any of the above cars will be a lot more sturdily built and reliable than a Fiat Coupe.
Apologies for recommending cars of the same era as the Fiat, but, as you can probably tell I just love 90s performance cars.

I am a Big VW Fan.... But a Fiat Coupe in 20VT Guise is and was a better car than the Corrado ever was.
