RE: Bathurst 1990: Time For Tea?
Thursday 3rd October 2013

News that Bathurst will be included in this December's GT6 release brought some cheer, the legendary Australian track something of a Time For Tea? favourite. We've had Brock in his fabulous Holden Commodore and the late Allan Simonsen more recently in a Ferrari all giving an onboard perspective on why Mount Panorama has such a fearsome reputation.
Bathurst 1990: Time For Tea?
Watch the Skyline putting the manners on a gaggle of RS500s at Bathurst

Virtual or real, getting a car round it quickly is going to be a challenge.
Inevitably we ended up on YouTube looking for suitable vids and this one stuck out, the R32 Skyline of Jim Richards making its mark on the swarm of Sierra RS500s with a spectacular early charge, later thwarted with the Win Percy/Allan Grice Holden taking the win. Added bonuses include some bolt-on cameras showing just how tight the mountain section really is plus a chatty mid-race interview with Richards as he carves his Nissan through the field.

This is one of the most legendary moments in Bathurst history. Puts the shameful behaviour against Vettel into perspective...

The track is a beast, with weather so intermittent, you have sunny weather on one part of the track while it's hailing on another. A kangaroo was bouncing around the track a few years ago and unfortunately got hit during the race. You can almost guarantee craziness.

Looked to me like several RS500s were monstering the Skyline in the main more like, or was I watching a different clip? The RS500 had over half a minute lead did it not? Not bad considering it was nearly four years older than the 4wd twin turbo Nissan. Did the Holden cruise to victory by default with its venerable V8!
Thought this video was posted because Mount Panorama Racing Circuit (Bathurst) should be in the upcoming Gran Turismo 6!

I guess you were watching the wrong video!
The GT-R had a 32 second lead, even considering its starting position on the grid. The Skylines were unstoppable in those days.Behemoth said:
Love the gradients @ Bathurst.
Why is there nothing comparable in Europe? Must be awesome to drive.
"Conrod Straight"
Conrod Straight is scary, half way down the road drops away and visually, it is like driving off of a cliff. The road honestly disappears.

As for the 4wd Nissan, a fantastic car but, it broke Group A which in my opinion was the greatest racing we ever had in Aus. simply put, 4wd when everything else was 2wd broke it. Mind you the sierra fuel scandal did not help. Now, when the nissan GTR races (current model) it does so in 2wd, go figure.
I'm a big Jim Richards fan and given how young I was at the time, my memory of the rain event that ended in the 'pack of assholes' comment from Bathurst 1992 may be a little off. I see it as;
A few cars in the leading pack drop in for full wets.
The GTR and most others stay out despite the forecast for a heavy downpour.
Accidents occur during 142nd, 143rd and 144th laps with the heaviest crashes during the 143rd lap, all due to rain. Cars that took on full wets are still driving fast.
During the 145th lap the race is stopped.
At the time Tony Longhurst in his M3 on full wets is leading.
Rules require the race results to be set on the position of cars on the last complete lap.
Tony Longhurst in the BMW M3 was leading during and at the end of the 144th lap.
But, the stewards, not wanting 20 or so DNF's, against the written rules, took the race back two complete laps to a time pre the GTR spearing off.
The Ford and Holden fans booed as they were upset that (a) the race was won by a crashed car and (b) despite the rules stating that a stopped race must declare the winner as the leading driver from the last completed lap, took the race back two completed laps to include more crashed drivers in the finished list.
Funnily enough and despite the BMW M3 being the car that suffered the most from the double lap roll back as he should have won the race, no BMW supporters complained, must have been the respect for Jim and his BMW 635 days.
Saddest of all however was Denny Hulme dying of a heart attack with the car crashing out at lap 33, at just 56 years old.
Bring on Bathurst in 8 days! Must get my beer recliner ready and give the wife a credit card, call her girlfriends and send her shopping all day. That or get the mates over for a BBQ!
Having driven both Bathurst and the ring Mt Panorama is steeper by a long way. The ring just doesn't have the gradient changes that MT P has but Bathurst doesn't have the length or variation of corners. It's hard to compare the two obviously.
These were stellar days for Australian Touring Cars that will never be repeated. The Cavalier nature of drivers like Gentleman Jim and Peter Perfect and just not allowed anymore. Driving at 10/10ths is production Gp A cars with a field of over 50 cars around a street circuit is unheard of these days.
This year will be the first time a Nissan has driven in the 'premier' class at bathurst in 20 years. Hopefully they and the AMG Erebus cars will make an impact to remind the unwashed masses dressed in blue and red that motor racing in Australia is more than the irrelevAnt Holdens and Fords.
