vw scirocco 1.4 tsi
Discussion
hi, I currently drive a little 1 litre, just while I got to grips with my finances, im 20 and looking to buy one, ive seen a 1.4 61 plate for 14,000, my insurance is reasonable and I can afford it, has anyone had any issues with them? what to look out for.
I drive approximately 4000 miles to work and back a year and 3000 social has anyone had any real mpg on the or is it worse than the figures quoted.

I have a 2011 1.4 with the dsg box which I've had from new. Not had a single problem with it, in fact its fantastic especially like the box which changes so quickly. Often suprises jonny the rep in his rep mobile sat on my bumper on the mototway, when the lane clears and it clicks down to 5th from 7th and leaves him disapearing in my mirror.
On short 1-2 mile trips in trafic it does 30-32mpg, on the motorway keeping pace with traffic about 34-36mpg and on a slowish A road trip where only 45-55mph is possible 38-40mpg.

ahh im leaning towards the 2 litre diesel just because of reliability of the vag diesels!
Yeah, BUT vag diesels aren't reliable. Maybe 1.6 is, but other than that, no. 1.2 tsi is reasonable reliable, my co-worker have it in Golf. I don't know will it last 100 thousand miles, but it's better than 1.4 tsi.I think that the 1.4 TSI gets to 160 bhp with both a turbocharger and a supercharger, whereas the 122 bhp just needs the turbocharger. 160 bhp is quite a lot to wring out of a 1.4 engine - and I've read that they can be less reliable as a consequence. The issues dont seem to be with the 122 bhp version, which gets great reviews.
Unless you do >12k miles a year, I wouldnt bother with diesel, and even then I'd take a long hard look at yourself before getting one ( ). The 122 bhp model is a great engine; surprisingly nippy and quite torquey. Given your age, I'd definitely take one for a spin as purchase and running costs (incl insurance) should be less.

For that sort of mileage I would see about the 2.0 tsi (insurance permitting of course) I have just sold mine after 3 years - I do a lot of city driving so the MPG reflected this at a realistic 25-27 overall. But the car was a of fun, engine is smooth and unstressed - also chain driven so no cam belt to worry about. You might be able to find one cheaper than the other variants due to the higher perceived running costs. That engine with DSG is fantastic!

I've got the 122 in my Golf and I have to say it is fantastic. Up to 55,000 miles now and no problems yet. :/Unless you do >12k miles a year, I wouldnt bother with diesel, and even then I'd take a long hard look at yourself before getting one ( ). Engine was replaced at 5,000 miles due to excessive oil consumption. Then a clutch pack failed, then the EGRV, then.....then I sold the bloody thing.
