Ok: got a drive to Romania and back this Christmas, and would like to do it without having to get lost too much. Usually in the UK I use Apple Maps or Google Maps and they're both pretty good. However, they don't really work offline and I might get a roaming package but don't want it all eaten up by a map app.

So: anyone know of a decent map app for the iphone that includes European maps - or an easy way to download the route/maps onto the phone?

Have a look at Navfree, I use the android version and it works better than my old Garmin.

I've used that in the past but it was a bit clunky - but maybe it's a little quicker now. I'd tried to use it in france once and it was pretty terrible even though I had downloaded the maps - it tried to take me the wrong way up an off-ramp onto the motorway!

Anyway, maybe that's the only one that's going to work. Shame there's not an easy way to cache Google maps or something similar.

(cheers)

I've used CoPilot live in France, Spain and Sweden without issue.

Buy a Nokia Lumia. Full offline mapping can be saved to the phone.

Co-Pilot GPS is my backup.

There's a premium version and a less feature full version.

but then you're stuck with a nokia lumia...

my mate used to be a software engineer for them and convinced another mate to get a Nokia something-a-rather instead of an iphone. It was terrible.

(I used to always have Nokias, but they died a death when the iphone came out)

Firm fan of the Lumia here and on my second, and the wife just got one too. It's a great phone and I navigated for three weeks through and around France using Nokia Maps. Once you've used and got used to a Lumia you wouldn't dream of using an iphone....

Co Pilot live is fine if a bit 'clunky' but it is fairly cheap.

The best is the iphone TomTom app but it costs a bit more.

Swings and roundabouts.

On the upside, you'll have maps offline when you are back in the uk as well if you go with either of the above.

when in google maps, go to an area of map, and type OK MAPS in the search bar, this will cache the map area shown on the screen, repeat for all areas you will be traveling through. You'll have to play about with zoom levels on the screen, but you can zoom the the whole of london and it will cache.

Why not just buy a proper nav? Flog it on eBay when you get back.

Even my 2010 Garmin Nuvi has a full European map.
I added USA maps for about £15 from memory.

Having tried to use a mates iphone for GPS directions, I wouldn't muck about with one.

Great ideas guys - few additional apps to check out.

Don't really want to purchase a standalone GPS and then have to sell it so definitely want to get an app.

Hopefully should be fine anyway, but it's just a lot less stress finding hotels etc. without having to resort to Google/Apple maps!
