A stone hit my windscreen this morning and has caused a crack.

I'm insured with elephant who have a £25 excess for repairs or £75 for replacements. I'm happy with either.

Where do I stand though in terms of claims? If I claim a replacement, does this need to be declared with future insurance quotes? Do I therefore lose my no claims? Whilst elephant state I won't lose it, is that only with them if I were to renew?

Had my 4th screen fitted into my daily yesterday. You pay the excess and that's it. It's never had any effect on me at renewal time. All policies I've had, repairs have been with no contribution, just an excess on the screen. Unfortunately this time around the stone chipped right by the edge of the screen so it soon cracked before a repair could be made.

I don't think the majority of windscreen claims will affect your NCD in any way. That said, Swiftcover - AFAIK - will suspend your NCD (for that year) if a claim is made. Windscreen claims should be fairly straight forward and whilst 'glass cover' does usually mean all the windows, there might be a difference if say, a vandalised rear windscreen is claimed for; each policy will have its own wording in the Key Facts, but overall, I don't think the subject is clear enough.

It should be crystal clear.

Just out of interest Mr Glassman, how much is a replacement windscreen for a 212 E class?

Two choices: OEM and aftermarket. Then there are different specifications: tint (and tint combinations) and hardware: antennae, rain/light sensors, lane departure warning cameras, etc.

AFAIK, they're all heated (down by the wiper 'park' position).

Back in about 1997 I managed two windscreens in 3 days in my MR2.

With regard to NCB I've never had to declare them (I've asked a couple of times) and I've only ever once seen a proposal document asking about windscreen claims, and personally I'd use the prescence of the question as an indicator of a cheapskate insco to avoid.

Mr Glassman, out of interest - what would I expect to pay for a replacement windscreen on a 2003/53 3 series coupe if not via insurance?

As with the Merc, you have a choice of OEM and aftermarket, the latter can be a bit hit and miss with the lesser known brands, but generally, Saint Gobain Sekurit and Pilkington are safe bets.

Does your have a rain sensor? The other options are top tint, and for the higher spec cars, there is also a solar reflective (BMW call this 'climate' IIRC) screen.

I'm currently getting renewal quotes from the main comparison sites and other usual suspects. Most don't ask the cost of repair if you declare a windscreen claim (and as it's an option in the kind of claim, I suppose that means you do have to declare it).

However several companies do ask for the total cost of repair and you have to enter something.

I have no idea what I should put in that box; like anyone I just paid my glass excess (£65) directly to the windscreen repair company, and never had any contact with my current insurers.

What's a reasonable figure to put if they insist on a value?
