I play quite lots of sim racing games with my Logitech G25... the question I ask is...

Is there any point to own steering/pedal device like logitech g25/g27 and few driving games when I've got a nice car (to me, 2000 mr2 mk3) sitting outside?

Or is it useful to hone the driving skill on tracks?

I have many hours of console racing under my belt.

the a few problems of trying to replace actually getting out there with a games console is.

  • theres no seat of the pants feeling.
  • that slightly panicky feeling you get as you slightly overdo it into a corner.
  • spirit of comradery with the other competitors etc
  • no moronic school kids to deal with talking crap and ruining the event!
  • Graphics are almost like real life!

some of the major benefits of using a console

  • unlimited seat time at no additional cost ( unless you brick your console lol )
  • can compete with jobless mates that are otherwise 100% unreliable
  • you get to stay close to the pies and lovin' from the mrs wink
  • Graphics are quite good

A 12 car rally event at a local motor club is much cheaper than dumping £300 + into a g25/7 and seat setup... but 1 bump, or 3 events later and suddenly the console is cheaper again! ( 1 event if you get too carried away in the pub after lol )

You don't end up in A&E if it all goes tits up on the computer hence you can drive too and beyond your limits.

First part is correct, but it really makes you get the most out of the visual, audio and steering feedback you get.

The second part though I disagree, maybe I just get too in to it but my heart starts going flat out with the stress of racing in sims. hehe

ETA: Yes there's a point OP, it's fun.

ETA2: By sim's I play Iracing and Richard Burns rally mod.

It's just a video game - it serves no purpose other than to fill your time.

My son beats me on the driving games because he's 16 and plays them all the time - he can't drive a car and has no interest in them.

Driving games are nothing like driving as there is no feel (well ok, they are similar to new cars) but even new cars experience cornering / braking / acceleration forces - the proper rally simulators are closer but still a long way from the real thing IME.

Jesus wept, how dare you go for a maccy d's (it's fecking vile anyway) can you imagine James Hunt being pulled up for such shenanigans back in the day?

I love motorsport and racing, but my god I'd have no chance at trying to keep my mouth shut.

What Hokum.

In real life driving I rarely get drawn into semi-drunken bouts of 'your mama' put-downs with some random yet deeply annoying Canadian teenager who has no concept of gentlemanly racing, before attempting to cajole other people I don’t know to join together as a force for good and vote him out of our lives.

There's undoubtedly some crossover as gaming teaches you racing lines and rough braking points on a circuit to the point where if I tackled say the Nurburgring now having done loads of laps in GT5 but never been there in real life, I'd be a lot faster a lot more quickly than I otherwise would.

As for actually going fast or getting near the limit to extract a lap time, I think it depends on what type of driver you are in real life but for me the lack of g-force and seat-of-the-pants feel makes driving a virtual car on the limit (also with a G25 on GT5) a very different skill to real life. I just don't seem to get enough forewarning of yaw / sliding in a game to consistently put a car near the edge of grip, possibly because I learnt to drive fast on track in real life first so my brain still needs that additional sensation of movement from the car itself to be able to drive consistently fast. Perhaps perfecting your skills in a game with it's limited feedback as most of the guys do in GT Academy before going over to a real car transfers better, doing it that way you're not losing any of the inputs you're used to from the game, they're just magnified and added to.

I play a reasonable amount of GT5 with the wheel/pedal setup. It definitely helps (for me at least) when things get a bit close to the edge in real life.
I went to Mercedes-Benz World and did an hour driving in a C63 (performance pack as well, lucky me...) and was able to drift it reasonably well on the circular skid pan, definitely better than a few other people there that day. I had been driving in real life for less than a year at the time, in a 1.4 Renault Clio. I think having the natural response to correct it/hold it in a slide definitely carried over from the game.

I'd rather they did a program that didn't have such a strong link to a PS3 game to be honest. Been mentioned elsewhere about someone like Topgear taking on the x-factor in a similar skills based talent show.

As for the lad that got booted out last night, what's he going to do now? I wasn't really paying attention but I'm sure the touring car bloke was actively encouraging him to pursue what will turn out to be a ruinously expensive pastime.

I don't think the console games get that close but something like iRacing seems very realistic. On that game you don't tend to get suicide dives or deliberate ramming because it's game over if you do. Clip a kerb too hard and you break your car. I'm racing open wheels and have had a few instances of punctures. You can really feels the difference in the cars even through something like a G25.

Proper sim kit is available as well, proper feel via pedals and steering and even full motion via hydraulics. Multi screen for visibility or even better full 3D integration with Oculus Rift. Very immersive.
