I bought a car 6 months ago and taxed it the same day using the green new keeper supplement. The DVLA it would seem never received the notification of me being the new keeper and have therefore not sent out the new V5 to me. Partly my fault for not noticing I hadn't received it, but I do have a very hectic working life.
Rang the DVLA today who told me that I have to send back the green new keeper supplement with £25 for the privilege. Apparently despite paying this, it takes 6 weeks to complete and I cannot tax the car in this time. The woman seemed far more interested in making sure I didn't use the vehicle in this time rather than offering any useful advice.
I now have to go and plead my case at the local post office to see if I can get them to tax it with the 'old' new keepers supplement as the DVLA have seen fit to shut all the local offices.
I cannot think of any business in the UK that could survive with a tttish attitude like this. £25 to update my fking details on a screen and print a piece of paper, 6 ing weeks to get the ham fisted pricks to actually do the bloody work and a fk you sir you can take the fking bus attitude in thanks. s the lot of them!!
I accept I am at fault for not noticing I hadn't been sent the V5, but for £25 I would expect it to be done in 3-5 days at least!!
Apologies for rant, fking fuming here! All suggestions welcome. smile

Had the same thing myself - not receiving V5 after buying a car that is.
I noticed after a few weeks, but you should still be able to get a V5 FOC if you didn't receive one.
Or is there a time limit ?

Post office.

If one PO turns you away, don't hesitate to try another. Some of the staff are jackbooted clowns but others are quite sensible. Particularly the smaller ones...

Ah, I do live in a small market town with a tiny Post Office so fingers crossed. Will give it a go.

I think you were badly advised.

You can (or at least could last time I tried it) apply for a new V5 and tax at the same time at the PO.

I did this a few years ago when didn't have the V5 yet and wanted to tax a bike. Admittedly then had to deal with it having an extra keeper on it but that was dealt with by phone.

I've done this before absolutely no problem. If they ask, which I doubt they will, say you've just bought it.

This is a scam and you should avoid dealing with this company. Oh... I guess you can't.

Seriously though I think it is a scam. This happens to an unproportional amount of people (me included) what happens is they claim they don't receive it and can then send you out a fine for a higher cost. They don't have to tell you everything and that's the problem.

They really are scumbags. I think it's a piss take they charge you to make a new driving license too. I'm fine with the old one thanks, it's you that think I should have a new one despite nothing changing, so you should pay for it.

I best shut up or I'm going to get banned.

If you have the green slip -then you don't pay.

Send it in, (with a covering letter or change of ownership form if you can still get one) and they should issue a V5c within a couple of weeks,.

The 6 week wait/£25 is for applicants without docs. DVLA will then write to the last registered keeper -giving them 2 weeks to tell them why they shouldn't issue you. If they don't hear back; then you get a V5c. However,if they do hear back, a whole new process starts....

With that green slip, you circumvent all that. Just tax it first -at a Post office (do it on line -the last owner gets the disc!)

Thinlk yourselves lucky, A freind of my wifes has had to re-sit all her driving tests because when she lost her driving licence and requested a replacement from the DVLA they had no record of her ever having passed a driving test or holding a licence.

When applying for the V5 with a V62 form you either need to pay £25 or have the new keeper's slip and avoid the fee. Get one of those from the PO and it's on there about when the fee is payable. I think it takes up to 6 weeks because they have to give reasonable time for a response, if there is one, from the current/previous keeper.

Last time I did it, the V5 was sent to me within a month.

Aha, ideal, I shall do that, thanks.

Thanks for all the replies, it seems I'm not the only one with experience of this!

So currently you are in possesion of an untaxed vehicle that is still registered to the previous keeper who obviously couldn't be bothered his arse to send off the V5?

Well hello free parking and high-speed tomfoolery...
