B660: My Dream Drive

An entertaining diversion to link the M1 to the A1 and break up a boring north-south schlep

Name: Dan Trent
Where: B660, Bedfordshire
Car used: Porsche 911 50 Years Edition

The kind of signs we like, right?
The kind of signs we like, right?
The route:
"An otherwise anonymous wiggle of B-road heading north out of Bedford before intersecting with the A1 just south of Peterborough, the B660 has been elevated to the position of celebrity through its association with Evo. Fair play to them too; with this and a certain triangular collection of roads outside Betws-y-Coed they've shared with us some classic British back roads and cemented them firmly in petrolhead folklore, making them must-drives.

"The '660 may be buried in otherwise anonymous English countryside but if you're ever heading up or down the A1 and have time for a little diversion it's well worth breaking the journey for. By joining the A421 it also creates a useful link between the M1 and A1 that can enliven any north-south schlep. Which is never a bad thing.

"You can pick up the B660 at various points along its length and there are plenty of other similar and less well-known equivalents spidering off it in various directions too. Consider this the basis for further exploration..."

Open countryside gives great sight lines

Why it's a dream drive:
"The English B-road is rightly esteemed as an engaging challenge for any driver and the B660 is simply a classic example of the breed. It's not especially wide, it's got corners galore and the combination of bumps, cambers and elevation changes will test any car and driver combination. What sets it apart from most is that much of it is unusually well-sighted and although not an extraordinarily fast road it does permit you to carry your speed safely and enjoy the twists and turns at a sensible rate that's still plenty exciting.

"If you spend your life piling up and down motorways it's also a nice reminder of what lies off the beaten track and how beautiful this more traditional view of the English countryside can be. Wales, Scotland and other more rugged parts of the British Isles often get all the attention but the B660 proves you don't have to travel too far out of the capital to enjoy a proper back roads drive and beautiful scenery."

It's the classic B-road test of car and driver

Highlights and lowlights:
"OK, so the B660 is a fun challenge and worthy of the accolades laid upon it over the years. But fame brings a downside and it's clearly not escaped the attention of locals and the authorities that it's a fun bit of road for a, cough, spirited drive. As a result there are lots of fresh looking 40 and 50 limit signs and many of the longer NSL sections have been broken up by these more restrictive limits.

"In fairness to those living along it you can't blame them for taking steps to curb those wanting to use it as an unofficial race track. So be responsible; there are lots of driveways, junctions and other potential hazards along the way and you'll encounter all sorts of traffic from cyclists to tractors and horses. Generally the sightlines are good enough that you'll be able to see what's coming and plan ahead but use your head. Indeed, as a case study for advanced driver style forward planning the B660 is pretty much perfect and the concentration required for stringing it together with this mindset brings rewards of its own."

Rolling English countryside at its best

Sights, stop-offs and diversions:
"Kimbolton is an attractive market town if you need to stop for refreshments and the like but otherwise this is a sleepy corner of rural England with little to distract you along the way. There is, of course, one notable exception and that is Bedford Autodrome, just a short diversion west of the Bedford end of the B660. If you really need to scratch your speed itch this is where you should be doing it, the local roads around about a useful sharpener en route to the track. Just calm it down for the way home!"

A little taste of the B660...

It's different because theres clear sight lines along the whole road, the driver appears in total control all the time and whilst making progress is not ragging it or getting anywhere near his or the cars limits.
Big difference between a safe hoon and an out of control full on ragging of a car.

It is a cracking piece of road, although the section between Pertenhall and Bedford has been ruined by the amount of 40 limits that have sprung up there in the past 10 years. For anyone determined to head to Bedford (and I'm not sure why you would smile), turn right at Pertenhall and head through Swineshead and Riseley to get there via the autodrome - a much more fun way of doing it.

If you're in the area though, don't bother turning off at Kimbolton, take the old A45 (now B645) to St. Neots - you can thank me later (especially once you've done the Cambridge Corkscrew section beyond Gt. Staughton).

Cheers,
Tom

This is part of my loop around the area, lets see if this link works:

https://maps.google.co.uk/maps?saddr=Huntingdon+Rd...

Out of St Neots, Kimbolton, up to Glatton, over the railway, back down to Huntingdon.

The end bit needs a bit of tidying up, I may lengthen it to avoid some badly maintained roads and Huntingdon if I can manage it, but the road out of Godmanchester to St Neots is nice.

I moved down here from the north east where I had a 60 mile loop from Frosterly to Hexham and back to Stanhope, now that was a rollercoaster.

I love that little stretch of road - just trying to time it so its empty.
The B645 though from St Neots through Kimbolton and to Higham Ferrers is pants - avoid it at all costs! Loads of cameras, potholes, nothing to excite a good hoon!!
Stay clear (then I'll have the road to myself)

And I believe I've seen you driving that very road.

Other than the slightly odd description 'B-road heading north out of Bedford before intersecting with the A1 just south of Bedford' I have to agree. Lived in Bedford for 15 years from '91 and this was a favourite route for a blast. Was discussing with friends who still live there, they were bemoaning the new 'limitations'. I used to make it a circular route and return south to Bedford on the parallel road running through Little Staughton, Colmworth, Wilden etc. Possibly more of a C-Road on the return, and I expect lacking some of the restrictions.

Between them great straights, curves and opportunities to develop some late braking to lose that tail.

The video was actually shot on a bit of the road not highlighted on the map, which is Winwick to Great Gidding.
Personally, I find travelling North to the A1 from the A14 is best, but stick to the speed limits. Nice, open views and you can see right out into The Fens approaching Sawtry.
Beware that In the week there are lots of coaches and 4x4's on the Kimbolton School 'run'. Coaches cutting corners because of their size, 4x4's wandering all over the road because they are ignorant and/or yacking on the phone.

My mistake; should have (and now does) read Peterborough!

Road is far too wide and the car is far too fast for me. You can see in the video he is short shifting and backing off while on a straight.

IMO, a slower car and a narrower road makes it far more fun. Something like this.

This road forms part of my daily commute through the grid-locked south east wink

That looks like the Micheldever to Stoke Charity road if I'm not mistaken... Like to have a blast along there when I'm in the area, then on to Micheldever Forest and Alresford where I have to stop for a coffee before heading up to the Candovers for further driving enjoyment biggrin

Well done on choosing a manual gearbox and knowing how to heel and toe biggrin - a rare sight in this dual clutch paddle shift auto blips world we live in.

Apologies for the map not displaying the correct route at the moment; summat's up with Google Maps and it seems to be updating itself and will hopefully sort itself out. You still get the route displayed as driven if you click the 'view larger map' link. Or this one!

Cheers,

Dan

That wasn't your silver/grey Evo (I think it was a III or a IV, only caught a glimpse) parked up by the road in one of the villages perchance? I looked at it and thought if I lived round there something like that would be a fun way of getting about! thumbup

Saw this in this month's EVO and think its quite nice- like the rear engine grill.

It was good review by a certain Mr Prosser- nice to see him on the EVO team!

I think the manual 991 has an auto blip feature on down shifts too (when in Sport Plus mode)? scratchchin
