I have just discovered that Admiral will not cover me to drive in Monaco! I can accept that as it's not part of the EU, so I would need to contact them to extend cover, but they won't provide any cover at all! I wonder how many of us drive into Monaco unaware that they have no cover?!

Never even occured to me, my insurer says "no - not covered and can't be". Any ideas where to turn for coverage?

I can't help with suggestions of cover, but why do you think they wouldn't cover driving in Monaco? Increased risk of an accident involving something very expensive?

Thanks for the heads-up, indeed!

Update: Just checked my documents and it states: "any country which the Commission of the European Community approves
as meeting the requirements of Article 7(2) of the European Community
Directive on Insurance of Civil Liabilities arising from using motor vehicles
(number 72/166/CEE)". There is also a list of all countries this applies to and Monaco is not on it.

So thanks mate, that is a good one, I wouldn't have thought about checking that otherwise!

Last time I was there, the car in question was registered in Austria and the insurance there made no fuzz about it.

Too many people going for a fast laptime?

It's EU membership (or lack thereof) I think that is the main reason. Whilst Monaco is affiliated at a trade / customs level, it's not a member state, thus EU cover doesn't extend to Monaco. I wonder who actually covers this?

Doesn't happen. Monaco plot come down very hard and very fast on people dicking about. Most people are just happy to pootle around Casino Square in their La Ferrari or Veyron.

You dont need to drive their anyway. Everything is walkable.

If that's the reason, I'd suggest also to check cover in Switzerland...

I disagree.

While the Casino square and Port Hercule are worth visiting, I found the less touristy parts much more enchanting. For example Harbormore Port de Fontvieille. And yes, while you can walk there, it is not the same as driving through the tunnels with the hood down and then park alongside the Quai Jean-Charles Rey. Also some really amazing roads around that little corner of the world if you ask me.

See post above. But here is the list of countries covered by my policy:

Countries include:
Andorra, Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Croatia, Cyprus, Czech Republic,
Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iceland,
Italy, Latvia, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Netherlands,
Norway, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden,
and Switzerland.

In many ways, Swizerland is in more European agreements than the UK (for example Schengen), even though they are not a member state.

This is a really good catch thumbup Hadn't realised it at all. This is what mine says

Insurance said:
No cover applies to any country which is not a member state of

the European Union, or Andorra, Croatia, Iceland, Norway or

Switzerland.

Excludes any period in excess of a quarter of the Period of

Insurance.

Apologies for keep spamming this thread but I'm really interested in this thumbup. According to this the Green Card system extends into Monaco and other neighbouring countries

http://www.welovearnold.com/short-term-car-insuran...

Perhaps the resident insurance specialists can clarify.

hehe

My insurer is all British about it, and still considered Ireland, all of it, a part of the UK. If you look under section G of the Car Policy Document page 20. wink

Irish insurers don't consider driving in the UK to be "going abroad" either. Commercial reality trumps the political.

So you'd quite happily drive from the UK to Monaco and not drive the F1 circuit, really?

I did at least 5 laps in a hired Fiat 500 and then did the Col De Turini rally stage stage! biggrin

(As a side note, Italy isn't far from Monaco and just into Italy there's a small town called Latte. If you stop in Latte and ask for a latte they'll look at you like you're mental, laugh, poke fun at you in Italian and then serve you a cup of hot milk.)

OP, it's a load of rubbish and you spoke to an idiot at Admiral. See the link below. For the purposes of motor insurance coverage for Europe from the UK, Monaco is covered under France, Liechtenstein is covered under Luxembourg and Vatican City and San Marino is covered under Italy.
