So, where is the cheapest place to buy a private plate from? And who will haggle?

I know the one I want. I just don't want to pay 1k for it!

Is it available on the DVLA site? I assume not so you call every dealer listing the plate with your offer, one of them will cut their commission to help you / get a sale in August.

ETA - Does the DVLA negotiate on price?

I believe the big difference is that the DVLA price is the whole price that you would pay on the car (i.e. transfer included), whereas most of the plate companies prices are generally plus a transfer fee - so although the advertised price is less, the total is likely to be more - when I bought my plates, the DVLA total price was certainly the lowest cost I could find - but that's a few years ago now...

You won't buy cheaper than the dvla-som site. Alternatively pay me £700. Plus administration fee. Plus assignment fee. Plus VAT.

All included on the DVLA...

Not heard of them doing that. They might send it to auction at some point in the future with all the risks to your wallet that will entail. Just stump up the cash for it now and get it bought. The value of something is retained long after the cost is forgotten (young Grasshopper).

DVLA is flat pricing unless you get involved in one of their auctions.

If you want a decent plate for cheap money then ebay is your friend. You can definitely contact the sellers and haggle, because many plates are listed as buy it now.

As always, if you want something specific it's likely to cost you more - in either time or money - than just getting something presentable.

I did that - changed my company name to add UK and bought D5 TUK - if misspaced it would read D5T UK but I wouldn't do that so maybe not so smart after all.

The plate I am currently looking at for a weekend car is with loads of trader on eBay for £500+ and on the DVLA for £240 all in, dvla seem to have some bargains about at the minute

Is it not the case that these 'traders' just buy the plate from the DVLA and then pass it on to the buyer, pocketing the difference?

Nothing wrong with this of course, good little money maker but I don't think there's point in looking anywhere other than the DVLA if they have the registration for sale.

I haven't heard of them doing so.
But they will still be cheaper than going through a dealer.

It appears from what I have read elsewhere that they don't. A pity as I would happily pay £750 for it but for some reason 1k just sticks in my throat.....

I can understand what you mean, £1000 is a lot for something you will never own.
But if you display it on your car for 10 years, it's only £100 per year, or £2 ish per week, less than the cost of buying the Daily Mail each day wink

And if it makes the OP happy it's not a lot of money for that either.

My only caveat with private/vanity/personal plates is that if you change your car on a regular basis they are a bit of a PITA

I now only have two (did have 3 but sold one) both cost me less that £400 each and one has only been on two cars in 12 years and the other 3 cars in 13 years with no current plans to change either of the current cars wearing the plates.

Edited to add so £3.33 per month for one and £3.59 for the other is the cost to me since purchase and including transfer fee costs for the moves to date

Even worse it is pure bragging rights for one of our pets...... So 1k for that.. Well, it kind of sticks in the throat. For some reason £750 wouldn't bother me though.... But 1k........ Mind, it will be rather cool... Suspect the better half is going to want to pay it.
