50th birthday next year.im tempted by a new tesla model s .but what else should I cosider for £54000.
I can just afford monthly payments over 6 years.

So far I'm looking at second hand Audi R8 Nissan GT-R or Porsche caymen.
This will be a last splurge before retirement so don't want to regret purchase.

I was thinking of picking up new tesla and travelling for free from scotland to Europe using the supercharger network but just a thought. At the moment.

Lastly I don't want to be stung by massive ownership costs or pick a car that will depreciate rapidly..any thoughts welcome.

The prospect of free fuel for european trips to the in-laws is very enticing and is really driving me towards a Tesla. However a test drive in a Model S confirmed that, although not as unwieldy as I feared, it is still significantly larger than I need or want. The question now is can I hang on for the Model 3?

For me it would be one of these that way I could go wherever I want without worrying about charging points.

Also worth considering: Jaguar F type,v8 Vantage roadster, db9, Alfa 4C, Chevrolet Camaro/Corvette, C63, Gallardo, Ferrari 360, Exige S3 or a beautiful Maserati GranTurismo.

Save some extra pennies and get a cayman gt4.

This rules out most new petrol stuff I'd think...?

It's a very difficult car to beat for the money. Probably the only EV I'd say that about at the moment. smile

None of those options I would pick over the tesla if you wanted a runner.

I'd certainly have a vantage/ftype/Elise for fun.

I am probably biased and I've had some nice cars before and I have a p85d on order.

I haven't even driven one but the p85+ I drove really is something else.

The 70d recently announced really does shake up the market. It's almost affordable, ok maybe not but it's much closer to affordable than I'd thought tesla would be at this early stage.

Like I said, probably biased but I wouldn't buy much else whilst the tesla model s is on sale. There is no BMW / merc / jag that is tempting me as a runner. They feel so old after driving the tesla.

I may get a track toy too. Will decide once it arrives.

Thanks for the replys
Yes jag f type added to shortlist
Also saw a vxr8 Bathurst

Tesla free road tax and possible free fuel is appealing as I've got a renault twizy for a fun car and never drive my SKODA VRS anymore.

At this price point and you not requiring a big car, I'd be picking the Alfa 4C all day long!
Relatively low running costs, new car warranty and minimal depreciation.

My son's got one of they Teslas (a P85+) before which he had an R8. I was sceptical that he'd make the transition but he is totally won over, and so am I - he does live in central London, though. It is a big car and he's dinked his wing mirror a couple of times, but it's amazingly quick and spookily quiet. Watch out for the options list, though - I'd say it's almost impossible to buy one at £54K - his was a lot more.

I think the 70D is a bit of a turning point. Well priced, very capable, most essential stuff included as standard - which certainly wasn't the case with the 60.

£54k seems an expensive way to get free motoring.

They do throw in a substantial four wheel drive 329bhp sports saloon as well.

£54,000 is the OP's budget and just happens to give one option of a car that can be very cheap to fuel

Given the latter, is ownership of this type of car really for you? If you have £54,000 to spend on a car, why not lease one with maintenance for the sum you have so you get no surprises?

Is this for real? Turning 50, and you want buy a Tesla?

Buy the Nissan GT-R and have the time of your life - it will outlive you I reckon. Less than 3 seconds 0-60? Mentally quick top end? It's frighteningly good. The engineers at Nissan are scratching their heads around why it hasn't sold more

Of course there is also the option of a second-hand Tesla. Since they now seem to be going completely AWD there is a school of thought that says the now discontinued P85+ will become something of a RWD purist classic.

Some food for thought .maybe leasing is an idea.

As I said don't dismiss electric cars.ive only got a twizy but it's got to be one of the most fun cars I've had plus have you seen the YouTube videos of the tesla insane mode. 0-60 in 3.3 secs.

Yes. One drove past me on Saturday and it did look pretty gigantic driving through town.

If it's a last splurge OP, surely it has to be something loud and exciting?
