Possibly a bone question but I'm picking up a new car tomorrow, but after I've got it home I just want to stick it in the garage and not use it until my other car is sold. The plan is to:

Tomorrow (23rd July)
- Buy the new car
- Tax online and insure it on a 1 day policy
- Drive it home and put it in the garage

Then, the following day (24th July)

- SORN it (again online) before the 1 day policy expires and leave it in the garage (I know I'll get stung for 1 month's tax but hey-ho)

Then in slow time sell my old car, and swap the new car for the old on the existing 12 month insurance policy.

Any issues with this, given the short term/weekend "tax one day, SORN the next"?

Frankly, why bother taxing it?

DVLA don't do anything until they're told it's changed hands - and you're probably going to confuse the system by trying to use the new keeper number twice.

This. Bit of a grey area, but I'd just do it that way.

Not a chance I would tax it for one day, personally I would also ask the current owner to leave it insured on their policy for 24hrs so you don't waste there as well ... I've done it before for others and had it reciprocated to me previously also ... Just a waste otherwise and you'll likely be covered on your main policy (check of course beforehand)

Will the current owner deliver it for a small fee?

If the car isn't currently taxed, when you buy it and tax it, it won't show up on the DVLA database as taxed for 3 or 4 days.

If you then try to SORN it straight away, the DVLA website won't let you, as it will still be "updating records".

So don't bother taxing it as you'll just upset the system!

If it was me, I'd book it in for an MOT at a garage near my home, then if I did happen to get stopped, I was on my way there....whistle

If it's already taxed then it'll still appear taxed to any ANPR camera as they won't have updated the details until the V5 comes through, a bit grey I know.
