Banging wheels

I hate this, and yes i know i can control it by being gentle on the throttle but sometimes i dont expect it.
Fwd car, 240bhp going through the front wheels.
If the roads arent dry, the wheels have a tendancy to spin which doesent bother me at all, but i hate when they bang as they try to gain traction. Horrible noise/feeling, is there anything to limit it? It almost feels like the car comes off the ground and bangs back down, i know it doesent but thats the feeling.
Like i say the wheels spinning and eventually gripping traction doesent bother me as its not done often its usually unexpected, but the wheels banging is awful.
Also what kind of damage could it do to the car hypothetically.

Fit decent tyres, make sure the suspension and bushes are in good condition, modify your driving style .
Damage wise , at best you are wearing tyres out unnecessarily, at worst it will break u/js , driveshafts , suspension components etc , in extremes it will break the diff or gearbox .
If you have traction control make sure it's switched on .
Spinning the wheels and especially tramping the tyres is not the fastest way to launch a car from a standstill all it does is move the speedo , the best that I have seen is 83mph in a car that wasn't actually moving forwards..

Sounds like wheel hop/axle tramp. Could be the springs are too stiff or you’ve got a tired shock absorber, or both. On some cars fitting stiffer engine mounts can make a difference, worn bushes won’t help so check for those.
Just had an mot last week, would the shock absorber/bushes have shown up on it? Springs are aftermarket and made by eibach, very good springs, quite progressive and not much stiffer than factory.
Yeh i think it is wheel hop.
I did have traction control in 'sport mode' at the time as i thought that would let the wheels spin more and reduce wheel hop.

My Focus ST did this quite a lot. Also if you snatched 2nd at 6000 rpm it sounded like the engine mounts had broken.
Mine does the same. Anything more than a gentle push on the gas pedal and it does it if the road is wet/damp. Brand new PS4s all round too, made no difference. Nothing wrong with suspension or geometry so I think it's just because these cars are quite light at the front end.

This. In any car where I've ever had this (FWD or RWD) it's inevitably caused by having damping rates overpowered by spring rates.
