Bought myself a Rav4 as a winter runabout at the weekend from a used garage. MOT had just ran out, but they were getting it done before dropping it off to the house tomorrow. I can see that it has passed today with just 2 advisories of 'Front and rear subframe rusty', doesn't mention anything about corrosion though.

Anyone got experience of this advisory? Or does it sound like just surface rust that can be wire brushed off etc?

My wife's Fiat 500 had this. It was surface rust, which we had treated and then it wasn't mentioned on the next MOT.

Cheers for replies, it's a 2008 Rav4.

Do you know if this was costly mate or what was used to treat it?

Likely surface rust but it's really open to interpretation from the tester, to make my point I have an MX-5 road legal track car, MOT before I bought it there was an advisory for rust on the boot floor, that was under my dad's ownership so I know he did nothing to rectify it since came into my ownership and I put it in for an MOT at a different garage local to me with no work done by me either and no mention of rust in the same area.

Ultimately you need to get under it and see it for yourself to.assess it.

Had the same on my smart roadster as the rear engine cradle and dedion axle are quite exposed. Spent a weekend sorting it out earlier in the year and it passed without mention in October.

Rust and corrosion are the same thing. Impossible for us to judge how bad it is from the other side of the internet so all we know is that the tester has deemed that it isn’t a structural problem this time around.

Sounds like a "looks a bit nasty, but not actually structurally problematic yet, keep an eye on it" one to me.

My old Discovery always had "minor oil leak" as an advisory. If I'd fixed it, it would then have had "chassis corrosion" mentioned hehe

Cheers for all the replies. Appreciate no way to know until get the thing up on a ramp. Got a nephew who's a mechanic, so will get him to have a look. Will probably only be keeping it for 6 months or so before moving it on again so not looking to spend a fortune, no other advisories anyway, which is a plus!

I had “rusty brake lines” as an advisory last year

I checked it .. they were fine, not rusty at all. I did nothing to them

6k later, another MOT, at the same garage no advisory for the brake lines but I did get one for rear tyres near the legal limit at 3.2mm

Hey ho

Two years ago I had an advisory for corrosion of the rear floor.

One year ago I had an advisory for corrosion of the rear floor.

This year I didn't and did nothing to the rusty floor in between times.

Same garage, same tester.

It’s normal on old cars Mot guy likes to make a comment shows he’s doing his job. All Japanese’s cars are rusty underneath to some extent once 10 yrs old, if it was rotton it would fail not be an advisory.

Jap cars in Scotland get Rusty underneath on the untreated soft metal by three years old, all the structural bits are protected by under seal.

I had "body corroded" last year on my 2004 Merc, MOT'd by the indie who has looked after it for a few years and had just started doing his own MOTs. He said it was pretty rusty underneath, but nothing to worry about. I wasn't impressed at all - to my mind it made the car valueless.

He MOT'd it again a couple of weeks ago and didn't mention it.

Our local 'Mr Clutch' charged £65 + VAT to remove the surface rust and apply a rust inhibitor (don't know which one they used).

Most likely just surface rust.

I had my 30 year old car undersealed a couple of months back, there were a few spots of surface rust which is now removed, and everything is solid. It's like new underneath. Paid £500.

Rav4 subframes are notoriously rusty, if it was a keeper, I'd strip it down and blast it and repaint or powder coat it.

The Subframes are typically made of much thicker metal than the cars main structure , not sure of the actual thickness but I think panels are typically around a millimetre thick give or take, perhaps some thicker stuff in floor areas but a subframe I would guess is 4mm or so, so would take a lot longer to rust through.

Its not that they dont but its less likely, a good check, rub it down with a wire brush and a quick clean and lash some hammerite or something on it, my dad used to use old engine oil as a cheap protection, it worked as well.
