Interested in changing my standard 18" wheels on my F56 MINI JCW. Looking into aftermarket wheels..

Never shopped for an aftermarket wheel before (always preferred OEM upgrades for the last 20+ driving), there's so many brands to choose from. Only brand I 'know' that is decent are OZ. Had a look around and they're not shy with their prices.

What's your thoughts on OZ as a brand, worth the money?

Oz are usually very good quality, but as a "premium" brand can be a little over the odds in terms of price.

What kind of wheels are you after? There's quite a few good brands who make motorsport wheels and road wheels.

I'm looking at the OZ Formula HLT 18x7.5. It's retailing at £1,340..

Have a friend who was looking at upgrading his wheels for his M2 Comp, was quoted £4,500 for a set of M3 CS wheels + Michelin Pilot Cup 2 tyres!!

That's why I'm looking at non OEM this time arounds.

There's masses of options for aftermarket wheels and annoyingly there's no right answer as to what to get or specific brands. I'd try figuring out what style you're after and then looking at various options from manufacturers.

Do you know what you're looking for in regards to sizes, dish/no dish etc? I find the minis look really cool on the likes of motorsport orientated multispokes, Team Dynamic 1.2 look great with some sticky tyres, fairly light and reasonably priced.

If you're looking more towards stylised ones, you've got plenty options from Japan, works, rays etc.

Lower budget you've got Rota & JR, both of which get purists in a rage due to their typically copied (or 'inspired by') designs but they are cheap, strong enough but heavy.

I would say that's pretty cheap to be honest. From looking on a few sites and going to 18" wheels and sorting price low to high, most places seem to start at about £400 per wheel regardless of brand so if you are getting a decent brand for that price then seems reasonable.

Want something with no dish, not too many spokes so the disc and calipers can show through - it's a pain trying to clean the calipers and inside of wheels with the current 18" Cup wheels - the OEM ones look like toy wheels so something that has a 'tougher' edge look is what I'm after.

It's tricky finding wheels for the F56 JCW given the size of the huge Brembo calipers - really limits my choices..

Cheaper and fairly plain option but I think this is an F56 below with the Team Dynamics I mentioned above. They are super simple but I really like them on hot hatchbacks, especially if you're getting good tyres, pilot sports or even semi slicks. Though I wouldn't be going for black, personally.

RKR? I'm not sure about that size personally but it looks good. Few friends have had on MX5's over the years and always look sharp.

I had Rotas on my old 200SX for about 6 years and the previous owner put them on in around 2008 I believe, not a single one bent, cracked or replaced & that was 18's with coilovers & polybushes. I was happy with them, if a bit heavy.

I think I've had three sets of OZ wheels over the years and never had any problems with any of them

Also used Team Dynamics wheels again and no complaints.

i had the superleggera's on my EVO V.

Kept the underside of the car above the road quite nicely and didn't loose any paint due to oxidisation.

Depends on what you want the wheels for, performance and looks or just looks. OZ are expensive because they are good quality, knock offs like Rota, Bola etc are cheap because they're heavy and the finish is poor.

Dont forget there's generally lots of used wheels that can be had at good saving, refurb and good as new.

Looking for looks mainly but if it's light then that's a bonus.

Hopefully once this lockdown is over, I can pop over to a wheel shop for a look around. Might need a test fit just to make sure it'll clear the calipers.

If you have instagram it could be handy to search the hashtag for your car on there for inspiration. I've done it for my current car and it's narrowed my search down to a few choices, quite handy seeing the variety of wheels owners have put on their cars smile

Isn't the JCW available with 17" wheels too? That'd open up a lot more wheels and tyres.

OZ are generally good wheels, they've been around a while now.

Quite a few other brands in the same realm of quality and price, assuming you can get the right sizes and fitment... BBS, Enkei, Konig, Team Dynamics..

Lots of good stuff from the Japanese brands and there are quite a few distributors in the UK. Rays Engineering make the wheels for several brands.. Gram Lights I believe are cast and tend to be more affordable, Volk Racing are often forged and ligher, and pricier.
