Lamborghini teases new Urus at Pikes Peak

The Urus was the most powerful SUV until the DBX707 - might this be more potent again?

There’s absolutely nothing subtle about the Lamborghini Urus, so there’s absolutely nothing subtle about the preview of the latest one. Take one orange Lambo SUV, thrash it up Pikes Peak, film a snippet for social media and tell the world now is the moment that  ‘performance reaches a new dimension’ - perfect.

Choosing the world’s most famous hill climb for the video is surely no accident, either, especially with chequered flags out at the finish. Back in 2018 Bentley claimed a Pikes Peak record for the Bentayga of 10:49.9, a number that Lamborghini will surely have its eyes on when the moment comes to officially time a Urus. Or why else take it there? Would be a nice bit of PR in the car’s largest market.

This is Lamborghini, too, the company that stunned the car world not so long ago with a pair of outrageous Nurburgring lap times for the Huracan Performante and Aventador SVJ. Who would put it past them to attempt a record there as well? Not least with another group stablemate - the Porsche Cayenne Turbo GT - to knock off a perch. The time to beat there is 7:38.925…

An updated Urus is guaranteed to have more power than the 650hp already provided by the twin-turbo V8, though it’s not clear yet whether that will be through conventional methods or a hybrid system. Surely an Urus Evo - or whatever name it ends up with - will have to be competitive with the Aston DBX707 in terms of output. A 700hp+ Lamborghini would make both the Pikes Peak and Nurburgring records look beatable.

We’re getting ahead of ourselves, however. We can see from the video there's a new front end but it's blink-and-you’ll-miss-it stuff. It seems to incorporate some Huracan Tecnica cues, while the wheels and exhausts look even bigger than before. And there are slashes in the rear wings and a slogan down the side that says ‘Keep raising the bar’. Which has to be about records, doesn’t it? We’ll find out imminently; some sources suggest a new Urus might be here as soon as Monterey car week, which kicks off on Friday and would explain why a car is in the USA. More news soon!

Watch the video here.

I think we are within 12 months of a performance SUV debuting on PornHub so it can claim some sort of size/endurance/girth record.

I still think VAG could quite happily claim a six-figure markup for a variant of these things with the Bentley W12.

I'm sure there's good reasons they've not done it, whether business case or brand identity, but I also bet there have been at least a couple of meetings where it's been discussed. If there's any marque where 12-cylinder engines are a key part of the identity surely it's Lamborghini.

Why use the W12 when they could use the V12 from the Aventador, if brand identity were important? You didn't forget Lambo had a a V12 did you!?

Slightly ironic that the first pic shows them avoiding the challenging terrain and using a path that most 2wd cars would easily drive down.

Considering it's actually a road car I find it odd they'd take an image like that in the first place.

The W12 would require FAR less effort as it is already in the Bentayga, is it not?And these cars are all basically badge engineered versions of the same thing underneath (Q7/Q8, Cayenne, Bentayga, Touareg, Urus)

the V12 from the Aventador would need some considerable re-engineering to get it to work correctly with the front mounted application

Precisely. V12 Urus ain't gonna happen except maybe as a one-off concept or bats**t tuning project. W12 is much less implausible, but I guess either the business case doesn't stack up or Bentley wouldn't stand for it.

Which, even though these really aren't my sort of car, still feels a tiny bit of a shame.

The w12 engine would not suit the urus. As it would be too refined. And sure a w12 engine could beat a v8 engine in a drag race, but in terms of sound, the v8 wins. The v8 engine made more sense from an engineering and production perspective. The urus is not Lamborghinis flagship vehicle.
