Ballistic Brabus P900 Rocket Edition breaks cover

One of ten pick-up packs a 900hp V8, because Brabus is gonna Brabus...

Last year, Brabus thought it’d be a fun idea to take the Mercedes-AMG G63 and up its paltry 585hp to a frankly ridiculous 900hp. Apparently, there’s an appetite among the one percent for weapons-grade G-Wagens (who knew!). Now there's another take on the formula. The Brabus P 900 Rocket Edition. Good name. For a pickup.

As you might expect, the German tuner’s new super truck gets the twin-turbocharged V8 engine from the G63, only with a few upgrades. Brabus increases the capacity to 4.5 litres, then shoves on a pair of specially designed turbochargers to crank up the power to the magic 900hp figure. Oh, and there’s 922lb ft of torque - though it’s electronically limited to 774lb ft, presumably to protect the nine-speed automatic gearbox. Still, it’s enough to get you from 0-62mph in 3.7 seconds and, if you keep your foot in, a limited top speed of 174mph. Who knows how quick it would be without a limiter?

Then there’s the styling which, in the words of Brabus, incorporates a ‘1-Second-Wow’ design ethos. Hard to argue with that, really. Just about every surface has been redesigned, with the big changes being the ‘Power View’ carbon fibre bonnet, which includes a see-through panel so you can peer at the carbon engine cover of that beefy V8.

There are more carbon fibre bits dotted around the bodywork, including carbon tips for the new sports exhaust. You've probably noticed it also sits a lot lower to the ground courtesy of Brabus’s own RideControl suspension, with 45 millimetres of adjustability. Probably best avoid taking it off-road with those 24-inch carbon fibre wheels, though.

The, er, ‘overt’ styling continues on the inside. Carbon fibre covers the dash, centre console and door inserts, with all the silver trim from the standard AMG G63 now painted red. No doubt you’ll be able to spec it any way you want - for the right price - but we doubt many will go for wood panelling with cream leather. There’s only room for two in the back, but they get their own centre console and infotainment screens, which may come in handy as a distraction from all the red bits…

No word on pricing just yet, but, for reference, the 900 wagon came in at around £500,000. The pickup version will be even more exclusive, though, with a production run of just 10 cars – 15 fewer than the earlier variant. If you do happen to be in the unlikely situation of seeing one on the road, we bet you’ll go “wow” the second you see it - just as intended. For better or worse...

Am I seeing things amongst the chintz, or does it actually have illuminated side-exiting exhaust tips...?

I can honestly say that "wow" was not my 1st thought other than when I saw the price tag, this thing really has fallen out of the ugly tree and hit every branch on the way down...

Hideous

but would be fun in a standard looking G-wagon

The torque must be huge, full bore starts must be tough on the transmission. (ooops, just read it better)

Impossible not to imagine the gentle tones of Mozart’s Piano Concerto No. 21 drifting through the speakers and engulfing the cabin as the dinner jacketed Bond-esque owner collects his b!tch on the way to a gala dinner. Classy as fook.

What a nasty horrible thing. The G-class has a lot going for it, this is a big sign post for a person to be avoided, although I'm quite sure the prospective owners will care little of my opinion.

There's clearly a market for stuff like this otherwise Kahn and Mansory wouldn't still be in business. But c'mon Brabus, shame on you, you're better than this, stop letting those other boys lead you astray.

For some reason I'm imagining this as a museum exhibit in the future, illustrating the ludicrous vehicles people had in the early 21st century.

Too ugly to even send to a crusher. It would probably throw up.

It's stuff like this that actually wounds my appetite for cars. The world has clearly lost the plot. Stop it!

I don't get the hate. I really don't see this being much "worse" than all the other hyper SUVs. And as I think Clarkson said about Lamborghinis, if you're going to have a silly car, you may as well have the silliest. Which certainly applies here. It's not destroying some rare museum piece, it's not really making it any less useable compared to the base AMG, etc. To be abundantly clear, I'd prefer all SUVs were killed with fire, but I don't think this needs to be front of the queue
