Mercedes-AMG GLE 63 S updated, keeps V8

The 612hp V8 isn't found in many places now, but it's getting a stay of execution in the latest GLE SUVs

All good things must come to an end, and that’s most certainly true for the AMG V8. Doesn’t seem that long ago (even if it actually was) that we all fondly bade farewell to the M156 6.2; now the emotional goodbyes are for that engine’s twin-turbo, 4.0-litre replacement. Already it’s gone from the C63 and E63, but for those desperate to get one last fix of AMG M177 in a new car, there’s some good news - you can still get it in a GLE 63.

The GLE SUV and Coupe range have been updated, with lots of worthy changes like better infotainment, improved towing - making it possible ‘to pull a horse trailer, a valuable classic car or a larger caravan’ - and entirely hybridised powertrains. But it’s the V8 flagship that’s of the most interest, along with its straight-six, GLE 53 understudy. Though both remain as powerful as before, with 435hp for the 53 and 612hp for the 63, there are changes throughout that ought to improve on where the GLE kicked off from in 2018.

AMG says it’s been through the software with a fine toothcomb, recalibrating and improving the 4Matic+ all-wheel drive, the limited-slip diff, the ESP, and the suspension control system for ‘a dynamic and superior driving experience’.

]This might seem like obsessive attention to detail on something so big and so heavy, but think where the SUV has come from since the V8 GLE first arrived five years ago: cars like the DBX 707 and Cayenne Turbo GT are so well sorted that advantages have to be sought wherever they can be found. Hardware isn’t likely to change for a car surely living on borrowed time, so an extensive software refresh it is.

The GLE 53 benefits from some additional torque thanks to - again - software, but also a larger turbo, the new 413lb ft peak (up from 384) able to sprint the AMG to 62mph in 5.0 seconds, down from 5.3. Apparently the 3.0-litre motor now responds with ‘extra spontaneity and added agility’. Buyers of this updated car can also opt for the 63’s AMG Active Ride Control anti-roll system as an option, which boasts a new setup along with the air suspension.

A nip here and a tuck there then, the AMG GLE package also enhanced with some extra kit - MBUX Augmented Reality, Multibeam LED lights, climate-controlled front seats - as well as interior details pinched from the S-Class and a new grille. Suffice it to say this facelift won’t be one to convert the haters, but you only need consider the popularity of comparable cars like the BMW X5 M and Audi RS Q8 to know effort invested in refreshing the GLE 63 is probably worth it. And when the V8s are gone from every AMG, they’re certainly not coming back…

I'm not a big Merc fan in any guise but this has got to be a moment for applauding them in bucking the trend and showing the EV powered sheep brigade a proper "V" two fingered salute. Love it and anything Ice that dares to live on.

Brown leather and fake wood…. In a modern Mercedes?
You won’t be able to order that spec in the U.K.

What an utterly gopping car.

I mean, I guess it looks ok compared to some of BMWs latest efforts but it's still pretty awful.

I'd say it's probably on par with the latest SUV BMWs. Not a good look.

I’m not a Merc or and SUV fan either but totally agree with you about the two fingered salute!

Great to see the V8 living on in these. smokin

I'm just trying to make my mind up whether I prefer the pre facelift headlights to these new ones though(I always preferred the pre facelift headlights/rear lights on the old GLC as well).

I'd prefer the leather and wood to the cheaper trainer grey in pic6, that is nasty

Glad they kept that stupendous engine though, the car's no looker but less offensive than most of BMWs offerings

What a waste of that engine - get it out of that awful thing and kept in a car. Definitely one of mercs low points. Imho….

Also the leather is probably fake as well as the wood.

It's not a looker but I agree with the 'up yours' to the EV bandwagon brigade.

Also I quite like the fact that it is also two fingers up to the anti SUV establishment.

2 birds with one stone.

Of all the cars Mercedes should've kept the V8, it should've been the new C63. Massive shame.

The AMG GLE 63 is about as elegant as Lizzo in a see through morph suit....

That is a really ugly thing. Engine aside, I don't get it. You would have to 'explain' it to most people as to what it is and why you drive it. It is eye hurtingly bad, rather than achingly desirable.

Sorry and all that. But no....just no.

Apart from the eye-gouging exterior and the haven of the V8, that's a far superior dashboard and cockpit layout compared to the dreadful angled iPad thing they've sullied all their recent new models with.

I wouldn’t say it’s a two fingered salute at all, it’s an existing car it it’s current lifecycle that’s been updated. The real midfinger salute would be the all new model retaining the V8 which I’m sure it’s not going to.

I'm definitely with you on this. I've always lusted after V8 SUVs, however it could be argued that the Petrol V8 is the wrong tool for the job though. Like you I'd rather the C63 carry on with the V8, but as said this is only a facelift and I doubt very much that the next generation of GLE will get this engine in it.

Great that it’s using a V8, but is there any part of that that isn’t hideous?! Have they got an excess of air conditioning vents to use up? And what’s with the grab handles on the transmission tunnel?

What happened to tasteful Mercs? They’re like Dubai on wheels these days.

Could do with a few more interior air vents, I'd say.

The best thing about those vents are that they actually don't work all that well as it is! I like the grab handles...because it gives me something to hold onto when my missus is trying to get off the drive! hehe

I think the Porsche Cayenne has those transmission tunnel grab handles as well.
