On one of the other threads, someone mentioned that Andy Burnham drives an Insignia. Poor sod.

This got me wondering - if I was an aspiring politician, with a desire to be seen as a man of the people, but also a petrolhead who likes good cars, what's the best car I could own that would still maintain that image?

What’s the problem with the new insignias?

Tbh insignia is probably a good shout. Not expensive, or too brash.

Else I’d go for something like a Volvo S60. Doesn’t seem to have the brashness of some of the German offerings. Plus they do a PHEV for silent exits from public events.

I don't think you can have a new car. There's still a lot of people in the UK who see buying a brand new car as flash. You lose five grand as soon as you drive off the forecourt, and so on.

Has any Vauxhole ever been the choice of the petrolhead? Yes, there have been a few. Astra GTC, VX220. And then there's the Monaro/VXR8 which aren't really Vauxholes. Was the VX220 really? And then there was the Lotus Carlton.

Basically Vauxholes (as my mother used to call them) exist for people who don't really care about cars. They're perfectly good as transport, but they don't get your heart racing! An Insignia? Might as well have been called Insipid.

I would go for something that is appropriate for London driving and also helps engage potential voters from the Instagram generation, like this 900hp Brabus Rocket, for example.

Exactly. That’s why saddiq khan uses three range rovers to take his dog for a walk.

I reckon you need two cars to pull this off. One is an EV, like a Nissan Leaf. It's not as expensive as a Tesla but allows you to be papped plugging it in on your way to a Starbucks wearing clothes made out of recycled fibres and shoes made out of vegan leather (read: plastic). The proles like Starbucks, so you do too. You're going to have one of their branded reusable cups. This will continue to please the eco-minded, and you can present it as being 'responsible' for those who think less about the environment.

The other car, I reckon, ought to be something like an E30 325i SE. The M-Tech kit, while more desirable, is also much more expensive. This clashes with your new image as a man of the people. Present yourself as having something close to what you want. The average person doesn't get everything their way so it's important you project a similar image. Your political base is that you are a thoroughly normal bloke who feels aggrieved by the current political system.

You can be seen driving the 325i only occasionally. It's something for pleasure and you're such a committed politician that responsibility trumps all else, so expect to put most of your miles on the Leaf. Maybe bring the 325i to shows and glad-hand with the public a little.

Once you're PM, you'll never be seen in either car again as you'll be ferried about in various forms of armoured executive transport.

A few years old Volvo XC90 PHEV on small wheels is the appropriate amount of nice/on-message for someone angling for a political leadership position.

Overly crap car choices are suspicious in their sincerity, and imo just as bad as something ostentatious.

Unfortunately the Instagram generation famously don't vote, and people who do are more likely to associate a G Wagon with Kerry Katona, which isn’t really the association I'm aiming for.

A used Toyota Corolla GR Sport. It might not be the most dynamic car ever, but ticking the 'built in Britain' and 'hybrid' boxes should go down well with some elements of the electorate.

I like to think I'd be a kind of low-rent Silvio Berlusconi.

Pretty sure we already tried one of those - there's a picture of him a few posts up.
