Just catching up with the folks, and they've taken delivery of a new Jag E Pace thingy...

So, we had this a bit with a BMW i3 that we leased through the business, the pomp and ceremony, in the valet bay, lots of congratulations... Which I said was weird as we've just leased it, so basically qualified for credit. Woo.

Now, it gets worse for the folks. In the JLR dealers they go, where my mum is presented with a bouquet of flowers, before they're lead through to a massive bay (they described as an airplane hangar!), with a black silk sheet over the car, alone in the centre of the space.

The sales chap then has a remote in his pocket, which then pulls the sheet off the car for the grand reveal.

At the time they were dying inside, and now relaying how cringeworthy the whole thing was! We laughed at the retelling as it's just so bad... Especially for a mid sized SUV thing, hardly a supercar.

Does anyone really like this kind of stuff? Just buying / financing something is a celebration now? And the big reveal? Is it just a JLR thing maybe?

Well, you’re probably going to be in the dealership a hell of a lot, so guess they wanted to try and make a good impression biggrin

Great idea. I think I’ll put a bed sheet over my old Volvo tonight and then get the dog to drag it off in the morning for that new car experience

Are you though? The dealer has to buy the car from the NSC, or factory, pay credit fees etc.. So they're not getting the whole load of cash?

Another point, so as soon as the reveal happened, my mum just left to drive home in her car before she cracked up laughing! So maybe it is a feel good factor... But not how they were thinking?! wink

We were laughing at the fact it was under a sheet, like you've forgotten what car you ordered and are suddenly surprised.

Lol! That's a great idea. Everyday is like a grand unveiling, maybe crack out the champagne!

Actually, next time I sell a car, I'll do that and get the kids to pull the sheet off on queue.

I got the big reveal when I picked up my 911 from the OPC, the impact was a bit diluted by the fact

It wasn't new so I had driven it 10 days before.

I walked down from the station so came onto the site via the side not the main entrance, walking down the side of the collection bay. It was uncovered so I stopped and had a quick look, they covered it up when I arrived at reception

It's the thought that counts biggrin

I had a more refreshing experience with a used car from Arnold Clark, got given the keys and told "it's over there" with a finger point and a handshake, I'd never bought from a car supermarket so didn't know what to expect, I did expect to be shown to the car, but really I didn't mind just being pointed in it's general direction. I think the whole ceremony detailed in the OP would just embarrass me.

I did once finance a brand new Corsa (it seemed a good idea at 21), the car was inside the showroom when I went to collect, looking incredibly shiny, the salesman spent time making sure everything was set up to my liking (bluetooth and the like) before I drove it away, I think that felt special without an embarrassing ceremony

Sounds like a great idea when I sell my old car privately, in preparation for some Eastern Europeans and their bottle of oil for the radiator.

For a JLR product, it's lucky the remote and sheet puller actually worked ...

When I bought my civic used I got a walk around in the showroom with proper lighting for inspection, an autoglym kit in a bag and my wife got flowers.

When she collected her new mg she got nothing and the car was damaged in the showroom while she was there.

Sounds like they did on the cheap, no photo taken of you by the new car, printed out and put in a magnetic clip together frame in a presentation box?

Just give me the keys and open the gate.

Some people must like it - they only do it because customer focus groupe and surveys tell them they need to.

We've only had it once, with a VW dealer, and the dealership had a dedicated "room" - like a big glass single garage - for it.

When I bought my E43 Amg I was given an option of a standard collection or a VIP collection, can’t remember the amount but it was a few hundred quid.

Told the sales guy I didn’t want any of that bks and instead when I collected I was just shown sound the car and shown how some of the things worked.

A young couple were picking up an A class at the same time had had obviously opted for the grand reveal option. Handed keys in a box, pictures taken with the car and then presented a frame with something in it.

If someone in a boardroom decided to make it more of an event to pick up a new car, something that may happen every few years for a customer, then good for them.

Oh no! A customer has either decided to spend a significant amount of their savings (or decided to put themselves in significant debt) to purchase the second most expensive thing in their life and the person delivering it tries to make the event special. How dare they!!

Would they have preferred it if they were chucked the keys and told it was “outside someplace”?

Believe it or not, the majority of new car customers are not grumpy aholes and actually quite like the “surprise and delight” of a reveal.

When my wife picked up her Mini JCW, the car was under cover, disco lights, music and a smoke machine !!

I don't need light shows, dedicated DJs or monogrammed gourmet pork scratchings.

All I want to see is tears of joy on my behalf from the staff.

All of them.

When I collected my (used) S5 they did the full 'reveal' - it didn't cost anything extra and they'd put a bottle of something on the passenger seat (although I don't drink so gave it to my brother and his wife, apparently it was very decent whatever it was). Overall it was a bit of fun and I didn't mind it.
