My son is in the army, and is about to buy his first car. Most of the time it will be parked on base (mod staff carpark inside perimeter) and some weekends he will come home, then parked in private car park publicly accessible. The car will be registered to his home address but his place of work can and will change to different bases (now at leckenfield near hull, going to Brize Norton next)

Not sure how to answer the where is the car kept question
The car parks aren't locked but they are guarded, are they third party premises?
It's not on street, nor on a driveway. Any squadies able to answer this??

Majority would seem to be private car park (as the public will have no access to the MOD property).

...and I wonder if business use is required considering he's moving site regularly or moving between sites in the same policy year?

I had a similar conversation with my insurer when they wanted to know where the car was kept the majority of the time...and I pointed out that I do 4 nights away from home in west London parked in a works/hotel car park and 4 days at home parked on the street in Liverpool, would I have to work out the total hours at each location for them to make a decision (they chose the London address as it was the higher of the 2 risks).

I’m in the RAF (28 years and counting), There are specialist insurance companies that are affiliated with the military that can help. His CoC or SSAFA representative should be able to advise or someone on his unit.

When I lived on base at Brize, Marham, waddington I would use secure car park as the location.

I stayed on base mon-Fri then home for the weekend and car parked on my drive / parents drive.

I found the best thing to do is use go compare or the like to find the cheapest quote. Then ring them and tell them exactly the situation. I have found in general they will note what the situation is on file and honour the quote. Only Hastings ever gave me problems so they are now on my black list of don’t even bother no mater the price.

Most insurers ask where the car will be kept MOST of the time.

As it’s parked on base most of the time, as you put it, then that is what he needs to tell his insurer.

If/when his base changes, he will need to advise his insurer to make the change. It’s a quick phone call.

If the car is parked somewhere else and is broken into, and he makes a claim… they are not going to have a problem just because the car is in a different location to where you’ve said it is most of the time. They probably won’t even care.

Cars do move. Insurers know that.

The address the car is registered to is irrelevant.

Use common sense. Look at the available options from the insurer and select the most suitable one.

If you genuinely feel that none of them are suitable, ask the insurer, not Pistonheads.

My Grandson is in the Army, he bought a new car and insured it both through an Army scheme, at very good rates.
Get your son to enquire at his base.
