BMW M3 (E46) | PH Private Area

We've all seen plenty of E46 M3s for sale over the years - probably not many as good as this, though...

Sometimes when we write about cars for sale in the classifieds, they need contextualising a little, their importance reaffirmed after a few years in the doldrums. Not this time around - it’s quite obviously an E46 M3. The best M3 for many folk, and there will be a few out there who see it as the definitive modern M car - perhaps even peak BMW, full stop. As cars to feature on PH go, this one probably needs the least explaining of all.

But with an electric M3 looming, there’s no harm in briefly restating why the 00-06 car was loved so much. It looked brilliant, for one thing, and neatly trod the line between everyday convenience and serious character. The performance and dimensions made it usable in Britain, it wasn’t too complex, a manual was standard, the sound was divine… you get the picture.  Such is the significance of the E46 to the M3 story that it’s enjoyed some useful appreciation over the past few years. Again, nothing that you won’t already know. As M3s gained turbos and automatics and four-wheel drive, so the relative purity (not to mention handsomeness) of the early-'00s machine appealed even more. And people were willing to pay for it.

Which is great news for the cars that survived the days of being offered at £5,995, because it means money is being spent on upkeep. When these were only worth £10k, it would have been easy to put off big jobs like the Vanos, rod bearings, rear subframes and so on. But if the value is closer to £30k, and the potential buyer likely more discerning as a result, then it surely makes sense to invest.

This M3 is notable for having every single E46 weak spot addressed, and plenty more besides. Having been dry stored for a number of years, it was bought by the current owner in 2022 (a man who’s had five in 18 years, no less). In the four years since, this car has had the rod bearings done (with new ARP bolts), a Vanos rebuild, a fresh timing chain and a reinforced rear subframe.

Interestingly, too, it’s been manual swapped. A trend that’s growing in popularity in BMW circles given it’s a relatively simple process, this M3 also gained a short shifter, braided clutch hose and fresh flywheel in the transition. So it ought to be as good as a manual M3 can be. With the additional benefit of BC suspension, uprated brakes, CSL software with carbon airbox, Powerflex bushes, fast road geo… clearly this isn’t your average Estoril Blue M3.

As such, it costs more than the average E46 M3, at £27,995, but by the sounds of it should want for nothing in the immediate future. We all love the idea of putting our own stamp on cars, until considering the expense and logistical hassle of moving a car here, there and everywhere. Sometimes buying someone else’s labour of love looks eminently sensible - it surely does here. Hardly likely to be any less desirable when the latest generation arrives, is it?

Having previously owned two of these wonderful cars and seen the prices rise this one seems a relatively good price with all the work done. Not my choice with the wood trim and they look so much better with CSL alloys in my opinion but very nice indeed!

Lovely, wonderful cars.

But it has had an MOT advisory - 3 years in a row confused

Ahhh, what's under 10 mm damage between friends!

Peak M3 coupe design for me, this has a huge list of mods and care, id have this in my euro win stable for sure, but would change out the wood for the aluminium pack

Lovely colour and looks a great car. I can't say I've ever seen an Estoril Blue in the metal. I used to see a Laguna Seca Blue one with a matching blue interior, that was quite an eyeful...

A small windscreen chip. 15 years ago. And literally the only advisory in the entire MOT history.

If there’s an E46 M3 with a better MOT history rolling around somewhere, I’ll be astonished. laugh

A definite icon, and I love it when I see one nowadays. Although I did find them a bit disappointing to drive though years back. I thought they felt too heavy and a bit slow to be honest, but I did have the Cerbera back then though, so I think that spoilt me a bit weight and performance wise in comparison in fairness.

Don't get me wrong - it's gorgeous. Just don't get why the seller makes a thing about it not having had an advisory in it's life when it clearly has.

Owned 2 in the past - a grey SMG coupe then later a rare manual CS - loved them both - more cars from my history I should not have sold 😂

Lovely, bit pricey but if u want the best then pay up, think the plate was added when it was very much sub 10k at nearly 30k it adds a whiff of chav imho.

Ive always wanted to drive the E46 M3. I would be interested to know if it felt similar to the E92 M3 which was a heavy old thing, the weight dogged every aspect of the car. I would expect the E46 to be similar?

Is the E46 considered to be peak M3 or is there a better one.

What a wonderful example of one of BMW’s best ever models. What a contrast to the current range of munters the company presently offers frown

I didn't realise we were at the point of manual swapping normal M3's.

Lovely car.

In my view it is peak, might not be the 'best' but has all the ingredients that make a M3 what it is

To do it properly isn't cheap. Personally, I like the SMG. It's the same gearbox bar a detent spring so they're all manual really but I don't think the manual shift is all that in a 3 pedal M3. This one has had the 545i short shift so is probably much nicer than standard.

They are similar for me, and I don't actually think the E46 M3 is actually all that much lighter than the E92 M3 anyway. Both have high rev/low torque engines, so they naturally feel like heavy cars when you're not chasing the redline for me.

If you stay at the redline though, then they definitely get a shift on don't get me wrong. But my E92 M3 was my daily though, so you aren't spending all that much time at the redline in that situation though, hence the feeling of disappointment.

It does look really nice but its not original which is i suppose both a good and a bad thing. I think the later V8 would be where my money would go as they are quite affordable and in terms of It's a rare thing being the only V8
