I'm talking about cars from about the mid 90s onwards , a time when I thought rust was meant to be a bad memory from the 70s/80s.

How many owners have been suprised when there car failed its MOT on structural (or other) rust?
Year or date range would be appreciated.

So personal experience or trade/ MOT station experience welcome.

My 71 viva , 79 Dolomite sprint both suffered very badly, my 87 528i was much better but still not great.

Why do I ask ? Its because I only run old cars as I never see the point of paying the huge running costs of modern cars as my annual mileage is only about 5000 so depreciation and annual dealer servicing makes it too costly.

Mercedes, although they claim to have got the rot licked we are still seeing rust on examples as little as a year old!

Jaguar XK8s are failing on front floor pans and inner sills.
X types should be failing too, but thats just personal opinion.

As previously mentioned, Mercedes!

They seem to be taking their brand image and deliberately tearing it to pieces and flushing it down the bog.

Mid 90's Renaults. Particually 19's and Clios. The body panels would stay nice and shiney but the structure underneath would be rusting away!

Mk4 (1995-1999) VW Polos. Mine needs new sills and rear arches on both sides. Needed plated welded into the sills just to pass the MOT.

Everything else on the car was fine, just the shell seems to be rotting away frown
