if it's a repost, sorry but I did have a good look.

Telegraph reports today that Road Safety minister has told Select Committee that Govt is considering giving access to DVLA driver records.

Because drivers have to give permission due to DP laws one option is that Govt may allow insurers to decline cover simply because a driver has not given permission.

Waits for usual nothing to hide nothing to fear contingentt to appear.

Why do successive Govts of all persuasion allow more and more of our data into the hands of private companies so they can attempt to screw more money out of us using data that we the taxpayer have paid for.

Plus there is a significant garbage in garbage out factor in this case.

It's DVLA remember.

Although we don't have acces now in certain cases and very often we do conference calls with the policyholder and the DVLA to check whats on the licence (in cases where there is doubt about disclosure of convictions), if the policyholder declines the conference call then the policy is ended at the next renewal.

I'm undecided about this, though I still despise the way HMG sells data time and again and the security of that data.

However with the conference call there is the opportunity for discussion to solve questions, with databases, especially ones that have known inaccuracies, it's easy to get into a "computer says no" mode.

That then gets you into the "have you ever been refused insurance" state but maybe I'm just being overparanoid about that.

have less of an issue with this as it's very much more open, if there is an error somewhere, it will be clear for all to see then and there.

can you imagine the pain and issues around sorting an inaccuracy out with DVLA doing the 'computer says NO' bit?
