VW launches new ID.3 GTX Fire & Ice

Remember Roger Moore in Fire, Ice and Dynamite? Apparently VW does...

It’s probably fair to say  the ID.3 GTX is missing something. Even if we’re prepared to overlook the absence of a revvy four-cylinder engine (tall order), Volkswagen’s idea of an electric hot hatch isn’t the sort of prospect that has customers running into showrooms, chequebook in hand, clamouring to be front of the queue. Probably the new limited edition Fire and Ice isn’t going to fix that - but at least the firm is acknowledging that the basic concept needs a helping hand. And what better way than getting all retro with it?

Granted, it might have picked a better subject to riff off, given the Mk2 Fire and Ice was (we think) a Germany-only special edition, and therefore not universally deserving of the ‘cult classic’ status VW has foisted on it - but we’ve decided to shout about it on the basis that a) the original featured a notoriously hilarious (and very ‘90s) interior, and b) its existence owes something to forgotten Roger Moore shocker, Fire, Ice and Dynamite, which was made mostly to advertise various bits of Bogner paraphernalia.

Bogner, you ask? Well, back in the day that signified Willy Bogner, the man who directed Moore in what sounds very much like an Alpine-based rip-off of Brewster’s Millions. But he was also the heir to the Munich-based fashion brand (hence the product placement) that is still famous for pricey skiwear. Accordingly, you get some natty material choices inside inspired by quilted jackets, along with ‘Firey’ Flame red and ‘cool’ Floxal blue touches on the sports seats - though not nearly to the extent of the hallucinogenic Mk2.

If that back story sounds more interesting than the car itself (the film apparently featured cameos by Steffi Graf, Niki Lauda and Buzz Aldrin among others) then you’re not wrong. But that doesn’t mean the ultra-violet metallic paint won’t appeal to some. You also get diamond-turned 20-inch Locarno alloys, red roof strips in anodised paint and, on the roof spoiler, the original ‘90s Fire & Ice logo.

Any car that links to a film in which Moore fakes his own death by nose diving out of a private plane ought to feature at least 500hp - sadly, the GTX is as previously advertised: you get 326hp from the electric motor, which is sufficient to get the car from zero to 62mph in 5.7 seconds, though not necessarily enough to make you feel happy about being alive, despite the modestly uprated chassis. Or the fundamentally worthy 367-mile combined WLTP range.

Owing to the fact that the ID.3 GTX Fire & Ice was initially revealed as a show-based novelty at the ID. Meeting in Locarno, Switzerland, last year, VW claims the production version is the result of an ‘overwhelming’ response - sufficiently overwhelming for the manufacturer to commit to building 1,990 examples. For Bogner fans, perhaps this seems like a no-brainer; for UK-based customers, it is conceivable that total mastery of the single raised eyebrow might be required to get onboard with the £48,360 asking price. It is available to order from Thursday.

I like the colour a lot. The seat trim I'd take in one colour, maybe even the orange if it matched the orange on the outside too. The wheels are certainly marmite too. Overall it's a miss for me. Definitely less than the sum of it's parts.

The last Hoorah before the update/refresh?

TBH better to see what the update brings in a couple of months as front and rear changes will alter the stance and look and the interior (the biggest issue) is getting......buttons

wouldn't the drivers seat be FIRE, the passenger ICE?

anyhow - this is not good, all round.

So it and you look ice cool until you are red hot when the fire bit happens.

Rather temping fate, putting 'fire' into the name of an EV.

Marketing people must be eternally optimistic!

More than the cosmetic side of things, the new '26 ID3 will move to LFP battery within a broader platform update for the group to what they're calling MEB Plus.

I have had enough of the "glue some black plastic to the bottom of a car to make it look smaller" trend.

Would be ok at £25k.

£50k for an ID3 is a joke.

It’s all a bit 1980s in feel isn’t it? “Special editions” with marginally off piste colour combinations, wheel (trim)s, fabrics, graphics and what not.

Can’t help feeling the ID3/4/5 product was such a disappointment in so many ways for so many stakeholders and the wider ID reboot really can’t come quickly enough. I suspect competition in the EV market is going to be fierce in the very near future.

(I’m told the ID7 has its merits in parts so will acknowledge that and concede the styling of the Buzz is at least a diversion but generally the VAG EV experience thus far has been very disappointing on pretty much every level).

Agreed, if it was 2002.

True but what really counts is the actual transaction prices, even if that means the price someone will pay for a pre reg that hasn't initially sold.

Basically, it's supply/demand economics. If it's over priced it won't sell so to sell they'll lower the real world price by whatever method it takes, discounts, pre reg, lease etc..

List prices have never been so irrelevant.

I prefer mine to the E350d estate I had previously, and that had a list price of over £60k back when new in 2020, so I think it's pretty reasonably priced on that basis. More roomy inside, taller boot, smoother driveline, more responsive, more effortless acceleration (i.e. doesn't make a song and dance about getting a move on) - bargain really smile

I'm an ID.3 apologist, the interior was low rent but fundamentally it was an absolutely brilliant family hatch back.

Some of the touches on this are a bit OTT compared to the standard GTX (which I considered as the next car but ultimately have gone hybrid this time around) however that colour purple is lovely.

Thought the same.

But this is an originally aEuro spec (ie - German) car so the drivers side would be on the left of the car and correct for the "Fire" part.
Should have swapped the seats around for the UK spec but I guess that would cost too much money or may be the driver's seat has some cut outs to it?

I think this looks great. Maybe we need a thread for favourite special editions?
