We've all seen them. Some supercar in the motorway, being driven at 67mph in the centre or inside lane. With me in the outside lane at Mach1 in a car I'm to embarressed to mention. The question is, why do they bother?

1) Because the speed limit is 70mph
2) They're more likely to attract unwanted police attention
3) They have nothing to prove
4) Driver is in no rush to get somewhere

Because it's a motorway and therefore not the last bastion of twisty driving heaven, therefore not particularly worth caning it, and lets be honest, if you can afford a supercar you are probably the sort of person who doesn't have to rush anywhere.

Well they are too big to fit through a letterbox so posting is out

Maybe driving them is a good way to get places

Just realised that their hooning has resulted in a nearly empty tank and are trying to limp to the next services.

1. Free Will

2. Value their licence

3. Get bored of cocks who want to race them

4. Realise they can't use the power on the road so don't bother and save it for elsewhere

5. Aren't in a rush

Take your pick.

This

They aren't out in their cars to entertain you.

Same reason why bikers don't ride everywhere at 180mph.

130mph or so is enough wink

This.

I've always said, if you're going to speed on a motorway, you really want to do it in a silver 2005 Audi A6.

Out of interest, what car did you see OP?

How else will they drive from place to place?

You've got to admit though, when a supercar does go hooning past you (Probably stolen..) it does make you smile that it's getting used properly biggrin

There is so much more to driving than speed. What exectly does screaming along a motorway achieve?

What you should be asking yourself instead is why the nobs who drive at breakneck speed in suicide traps don't go out and buy something decent? And what exactly are they trying to prove or make up for?

Reasons for slower progress on motorways in something expensive -
you get no thrilling feedback until 150 plus so why not pick a speed you're happy with;
the paint takes a hammering at higher speed;
the fuel consumption is exponentially much higher the faster you go in a big-engined car
people think "what a nob" because they are envious
first target of a mobile scamera van
if anything breaks, it will cost more than your car to replace.

They are more interested in polishing than driving, I can't just sit at that speed, it sends me to sleep.

Because Motorway driving is real world motoring, everyone knows that this is the domain of the accessible torque provided by TDIs.

Supercars are all petrol powered (apart from the 335d) and as a result their owners know that if they try to keep up with an A5 TDI in motorway traffic they will be blown away in a cloud of black smog trying to keep up.

5)Driving to or from a track. Why speed on the motorway when you have been pushing 160 on the straights of a circuit.
