places to source second hand engines?
Discussion
Hi All,
I thought i'd stick this in the general forum.
I'm after a replacement engine for my Audi S4 4.2 engine code BBK. Having scoured the net i've found a new places which seem to be able to offer an engine, but again have found lots of negative reviews of some of these places..
I was wondering if anyone had any recommendations on places? It seems ebay uk doesn't have much, but there are a couple of examples on german ebay..
Any help or experience appreciated!
I've luckily got the use of ramps and have the old engine out so labour isn't an issue.. however finding the engine is! can't afford to get ripped off or buy a pup..

What happened to your engine ?, I fancied an S4 Avant but the reportedly remote chance of it doing the cam chains/tensioners put me off, this pic made me realise I probably couldn't fix it myself. I thought i'd stick this in the general forum.

Put in your details and it will send your request to 100s of scrappies all over the UK. I have used it for loads of different things and more often than not it has came up with the goods for me.

From the other thread..
I thought you might fancy some pictures
So...
This on it's own apparently isn't too much of an issue as the head can be fixed (from my little knowledge it looked foobar'd to me) However both heads had damage with 12 bent valves in total.
What made it uneconomical to repair was the fact that there was bore damage. Alas he drove it around like this for a while and now you can see the little end bearing on one of the cylinders.
The reason for the valve damage was a broken cam chain tensioner and guide (if you look at the pic you can see the slack chain in the bottom LHS)

if at all possible , buy an engine that you have seen running
This is good advice, have bought a few 2nd hand engines and it seems like 9 out of 10 people selling them are dodgy. If you use something like 24/7 spares or ebay try to go and see the engine running before buying, if not talk to the people selling it ask lots of questions and get a written guarantee, if they sound dodgy they probably are.

This the same? http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/2003-AUDI-S4-4-2-V8-QUAT...
yup but apparently he doesn't have the engine <sadface>If you cant find an engine for sensible money and you can be arsed to strip your block down I'd have thought compatible material liners could be fitted, though there's not many places that can do it properly. The car has 150k up though so what is it worth ?, as I mentioned before turbo engine/gearbox transplant or breaking seems the best financial option.
