Spacious comfortable car for up to 5k?
Discussion
Looking to get a generally nice car for the road,I have a little track car so all my urge to race everywhere goes on that.
I don't mind a diesel if it's a solid engine, probably have the dpf removed on one though.
No big engines
0-60 must be 10 seconds or under.
Good spec inside
Comfortable and can carry people comfortably.
Drives well
I've had a little look at mercedes and lexus, heard bad about the lexus diesels.not checked out Audi and bmw yet as I find them just too common on our roads.I'd still take one though
Anybody advise?particularly on how reliable their recommendation is etc? Thanks

I was in a similar position recently, looked at 3 series touring but people want £5k for high mileage 318Ds so I looked around for something else, I liked the Lexus IS200 Sportcross, rare, it looks good but I worried the 2L straight 6 is thirsty, 6 sp manual though!.
Also looked at the first generation of A4 Allroads which look great, loads of space and have huge torque but again running costs could be high and they are getting old. Toyota Avensis' look dull, and probably are but a few models had the 180bhp engine which could be worth a look. Didnt look at Mondeos as they are too long for my garage, same as C200 Mercs.
Eventually I bought an 6 speed auto Saab 9-3 1.9 TID Vector Sport, loads of space, goes well enough as its the 150 bhp engine, sort of subtle and very comfy.
Parkers have loads of stats on the website for all the models you can think of, well worth a look.

No French cars allowed.never will I own one.
Is that Japanese badged cars with a majority ownership by a french company and manufactured in the UK and Spain anong other countries?Or American owned, European built cars using french electrics and engines?
Or french badged cars made by Japanese owned manufacturing plants outside of France?
Volvo S80 2007 onwards, most have dual zone climate, heated leather seats, all electric windows/doors/mirrors, very smooth, very quiet, very comfortable seats and every safety extra you can think off. Very reliable and cheap to service. Massive boot, suits us for 5 people holidays. V70 is more expensive but just as good with bigger boot. Various diesel engines and a couple of petrols. People forget Volvo these days but their cars are so good.

With a limited budget and a focus on reliability, I'd that thought you'd be better off avoiding cars where you're paying for the badge. Something like a Passat, Mazda 6 or Toyota Avensis will be significantly new/lower mileage than the equivalent Mercedes, Lexus, BMW or Audi.
