RE: Paul Newman at Le Mans: Pic Of The Week
Friday 17th April 2015
Earlier this week we ran the trailer for Winning: The racing life of Paul Newman as a Time For Tea? and in the course of researching it delved into the LAT archives for some supporting images. And there were some beauts. Our natural Le Mans bias, combined with the fact it was Newman's most high-profile success, led us to pick this one of the Newman/Stommelen/Barbour Porsche 935 sandwiched between that of Shurti/Heyer and Fitzpatrick/Lafosse/Grohs. The Newman car ended up on second, the other two retiring and the overall race won by the Kremer 935 of Klaus Ludwig, Don Whittington and Bill Whittington.

When Paul Newman went racing he did it properly - POTW celebrates accordingly
Cool pic, cool car, cool guy. We look forward to finding out more about Newman's racing career as and when we get to see the documentary over here.

Newman, was a good amateur racer, but it was Rolf Stommelen, who was the main driver of that car. He was lapping ten seconds a lap quicker than Newman and Dick Barbour. Still, I do remember that back in the early 2000's Newman,in his 70's winning his class at the Daytona 24hrs. Sure he didn't do most of the driving, but what an achievement.
