Cyclist Blocked on Pedestrian Crossing
Discussion
Just been sent this - found myself watching thinking 'cyclists are all the same' early on in the video but refreshing to see the number who had bothered to stop at the crossing!

Honestly I dont see a problem with this, There was ample room for him to go through, it is my understanding that on zebra crossing pedestrians have right of way and traffic must stop and allow them to pass, there was not a pedestrian in his way (until he stopped and walked backwards into him).
In my view this would be like driving up to a yield sign, going with no traffic on the junction when suddenly the traffic that has just gone past then stops and reverses into your path. Its not exactly the same as driving through a pedestrian crossing with a lighted system for road traffic.

The whole purpose is that rules apply to the whole population not just a sub set.
If the pedestrian had got half way through and a car squeezed though would that still be acceptable? How about a truck?
The rule is that all traffic stop when there is a pedestrian on there not for some people to pick and choose what rules apply to them

ped should get done for assault imo. had he have walked on instead of stopping the cyclist wouldn't have been near him in any way that would have caused ruined his day. the guy turns round and pushes him with his body towards the traffic island.
sure the cyclist should have stopped (or slowed down) but when you're on a crossing you don't decide to deliberately stop and change direction. what the cyclist was intending to do was a complete non-event typical thing that almost everyone does.

WHAT?! I hope you don't drive!
From the Highway code:
"you MUST give way when a pedestrian has moved onto a crossing"

That's hilarious. Now come out with something sensible, ok?
As I said on the other thread, the relevant law is the following. Anyone who is insisting all vehicles must stop should perhaps retake their driving test:
The Zebra, Pelican and Puffin Pedestrian Crossings Regulations and General Directions 1997
19. No pedestrian shall remain on the carriageway within the limits of a crossing longer than is necessary for that pedestrian to pass over the crossing with reasonable despatch.
25.—(1) Every pedestrian, if he is on the carriageway within the limits of a Zebra crossing, which is not for the time being controlled by a constable in uniform or traffic warden, before any part of a vehicle has entered those limits, shall have precedence within those limits over that vehicle and the driver of the vehicle shall accord such precedence to any such pedestrian.

Yes Pedestrians having right of way means road traffic MUST give way.

That was after he stopped and turned, if he had continued on his path as a reasonable individual would have expected there would have been room for a bicycle to pass. EDIT: Also note how the cyclist did perform the maneuver at a speed where he could stop safely provided the pedestrian did something unpredictable, if he had been carrying innapropriate speed then yes I would agree the gap would be too small.

Room maybe but the pedestrian was still on the carriageway and has right of way. Therefor, all traffic must stop.
The cyclist thought he didn't have to. He did.
yes but he would have had room if the ped did not stop. the ped should never had stopped, turned around. there is no reason for him to stop. The cyclist thought he didn't have to. He did.
All bks frankly.
If there is a pedestrian on a Zebra crossing, all traffic must stop. What is it that you don't understand about this?
'Room' 'space' to squeeze past could be applied to an articulated lorry. Do you think any reasonable person would be happy for one of those to 'squeeze' past?

I applaud the pedestrian for confronting the cyclist and I applaud the other cyclists for waiting until the crossing was clear.
However, having come back from a few days in Germany and Holland, I must say that British cycling seems to be totally different from over there. I didn't see a single commuter dressed like that, over here almost every single cycle seems to be a 'head down' job instead of the comfortable sit upright models used en masse over there.
We did see 'racing' cyclists, but none of them had back packs on 'cos none of them were on their way to work.
We have the safest roads and the most benign terrain and weather, yet 4x4s are used en masse here and every cycle is either a 'racer' or a mountain bike.
What's wrong with the comfortable, practical, more-suitable utility cycles and cars?

The pedestrian did have a reason. His reason was to make the cyclist aware they were breaking the law. Perhaps the pedestrian has a sense of civil duty in these matters.Gassing Station | General Gassing | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
