Are 3 cars for one person too many?
Discussion
First world problems, I know...
My dad currently has a 1 year old Range Rover Sport and a Defender 110 that's coming up for 3. Both are great cars in their own right and suit his needs, the RRS is the comfortable cruiser and the Defender is used for shopping etc.
Only problem now is, he's ordered a DB11 which we are collecting next weekend...so I've been trying to work out which of the cars needs to go as he doesn't use the two he has already (RRS done nearly 6k and the 110 not even done 10k!)
I think he should sell the Defender and just use the RRS for daily duties, and DB11 for special occasions, however he finds it a bit big for parking (but since when was a 110 easy to park?)
Thought about chopping the RRS and Defender in for something like an F-Pace but the RRS is a brilliant car and we'd be very sad to see it go, especially so soon.
Any thoughts?

Yes. I have thoughts.
They're his cars. If he has the means and the space then he can do what he wants?
Sorry should've said, he's thinking the same as me, having three is a bit excessive so I'm just asking other people's opinions on the matter. They're his cars. If he has the means and the space then he can do what he wants?
Daily duties such as going to the shops, are much easier in a small car like a Fiesta. As he has the means and space I'd get rid of one of them for a small car, may be even a Leaf if he can do what he needs on a charge and keep a comfy cruiser for high days, holidays and err, cruising.
3 is fine, if you have the space and the money then why not. It's nice having a choice of what to drive. For example I currently have a sorn'd MX5 and a VW Polo with a dropped valve, or if I'm brave I can ask my wife if I can borrow the Mini I bought her.
Ask you dad out of the current two, if the garage was on fire and he only had time to get one out, which would it be, therein lies your answer.

The more the merrier. I'd have dozens if I had the money and space; I like to collect. There is a saying about bikers - if you only have one, you aren't a biker (or something). I only have one. I want more. :P
But in all seriousness; I have a classic (DeLorean) that I'm restoring. I also have a daily driver and a weekend car. That's three and they are all different for different purposes. So, three is about right. Ahem.

I think 3 cars might actually be the perfect amount while still being able to enjoy all 3 regularly. Something nice but practical for everyday use, fancy sports car for when you want to go for a proper blast and a classic restoration for special occasions.
Your dads doing it just about right. Id get rid of the Defender 110 and maybe replace it with a classic, one he can shine up with a cloth and oogle at.

Thanks, interesting responses!
I like the idea of a Leaf or something for shopping but I expect that he would say if he were to change any of the cars it would be changing two for one. I'd like to see the RRS used more as I feel it is wasted just sitting on the drive.
The problem with the RRS is it fills both briefs of the 110 and DB11 to a certain extent, it's powerful enough, comfy and practical, so it's diicult trying to work out what to change it for. I personally love it so am trying to keep hold of it for as long as possible!
I wouldn't think 3 cars is too many if he actually used them, it's just a waste them sitting around and diesels especially don't like that... I feel that the RRS could fulfill daily duties and the DB11 could be the special car.
A Disco Sport would be a good replacement for both LR'S due to it being a bit smaller, but no petrol option as yet.

I'm running three cars with a fourth (MGB awaiting restoration) in the garage...
I work from home or away so don't have a daily commute, which I think makes car choices a little easier..
I also live on my own, but have... Old Golf (stopped depreciating around 10 years ago), but it's a cracking piece of kit for going shopping, taking crap to the tip (including garden rubbish), or leaving in the pub car park (regular occurrence), costs little to run but is a bit heavy on juice (VR6).
The other two are 'toys', a highly modified (in the right places) Chimaera 500 and a V8 Vantage. The Chim is huge fun for roof down hooning and track days, and the Aston is, er, well it's an Aston, and that's the only explanation it needs
In answer to the OP's question, in my personal opinion, three cars are not too many for one person. If I had more garage space and more money I would have more cars... Actually, I proper fancy a Morgan 3 wheeler
Congrats to your Dad with the DB11 purchase, hopefully it won't spend too much time sitting in his garage

That would be my PoV. Get rid of the RRS and enjoy two very different cars.Gassing Station | General Gassing | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
