car buyer scam
Discussion
A warning to all private sellers.
Yesterday we fell victim to a scam by 3 Eastern European thugs.
They came late in the day to look at our second hand car, we showed them around the car & then went for a test drive after around 5 minutes smoke was billowing out of the exhausts. We limped back and they said the head gasket was gone, one off them dipped his finger in the expansion tank and it was full of black oil.
I could not believe it as this is a good car.
The penny dropped when they insisted they would still buy it for half price (intimidating)
We googled thi and found that they distract you round the back of the car while the other one pours oil into the expansion tank.
They left empty handed but we now the have job of putting it right.
Be vigilant this is a horrible thing to suffer

Deal with only ONE buyer guys, and watch them like a hawk.
Personally I,
1, Show the paperwork and ask if they are satisfied.
2, Walk them round the car with the keys in MY pocket and again, confirm satisfaction.
3, Pop the bonnet and start the car then keep a close eye.
4, Shut the engine off and offer a test drive. At this point I'm asking the big questions 'Are you happy so far ?' and 'If you like how it drives I take it you'll make an offer ?' -Anything other than a Yes, and were going nowhere.
5, Proof of insurance or I drive.
6, Following the test drive encourage an offer.
If they fk about, wish them all the best with their car search and show them out.

I would like to see a receipt for coolant and ad for the car or am calling troll.
The only way they could have got it to smoke would be to squirt oil up the exhaust and hope it got hot enough to burn off. Most modern car exhaust in my experience wouldn't. And it not smoking straight after changing the coolant as it had all burnt off would be way too much of a coincidence.
