I managed to get a set of snow chains on ebay for not very much. They are exceeding well built and would cost a fecking fortune to buy new.

However they are a tad too small for the tyres on my landrover.

It needs new tyres so i want to buy a set of tyres that will fit

So how can i measure the chains and then work backwards to arrive at the correct tyre size.

The chains should have a tyre size on the box.
If they were very cheap they might be chains for tiny little Mini wheels, so you'll have a hard time getting them to fit on a Landy.

Lay them flat, measure them end to end.
That'll give you a circumference of the wheel they can fit.
Do some maths and work out what size tyre you need on your wheel to fit into that circumference.

You may need to use Pi.
Mmmmmm Pi.
Which sounds very clever but.

They didn't come in a box so that doesn't work

They are about a few inches too short

Snow chains don't go around the very outside of the tyres the side chains are normally halfway up the sidewalls.

its not that simple

Well, if you have to buy new tyres to fit the snow chains, why not just buy winter/snow tyres?
I am buying genral grabber AT2 which are as close you can get to a decent winter tyre easily in landrover sizes

But occasionally i need a bit more traction

Its a landrover

Speedo accuracy is terrible at best

The tyres need replacing anyway so no extra cost on getting the right size
