I keep looking for a manual V8 car and I keep seeing ridiculously cheap 5 litre V8 M5's around £6k.

Why have these dropped so far so fast ?

The older 6 cylinder M5's cost more at this age.

Are they stupidly expensive to run or is there just so many alternative these days ?

Just seen one with 78k for sub £7k which seems fantastic value to me.

Why on earth are some 3.8's fetching MORE than the V8's though ?

Because a really lovely 3.8 is sought after by an enthusiast, whereas a cheap bottom of the market E39 M5 is sought after by the aforementioned knuckledraggers.

You'll note the lovely M5's are still £10k.
I don't know I've seen a fair few below £8k like this one (admittedly the ad is a bit short on info)

Because they are a big engined saloon car.

Look at the price drop of the competitors, a similar age XJR or E55 AMG can be had for less.

They arent really collectable as there was so many made, they are fairly dear to look after and there are more alternatives these days.
BUT it is the ONLY V8 Manual available.

540i is available in manual [rare] and start at like 1500 quid. Dog van too.
I meant in reply to the Merc / Jag etc alternatives.

(S4 is available as a manual but is 4WD)

A 540 really isn't comparable to an M5

I keep getting tempted to px against a nice M5, but I really don't think I could put up with 2/300 miles to a full tank that is circa £100! Gah, so tempting but must-keep-sensible-head-on!

Slightly off topic, how fast do you think they will fall when the new M5 is released, as I can see the E60 taking a real hammering!
Ah but I don't cover many miles and my recent purchase (an RX7 FD) is only managing 15mpg and I don't like the lack of torque nor the noise.

I don't think the new M5 will affect the price of these I doubt many are in original owners hands who are thinking of trading up.

I think the continuing crap economy & petrol prices will continue to push prices down. I'll keep an eye out and maybe buy one around Xmas.

A new engine is about £10K.
Why on earth would it need a new engine ?

It's a V8 BMW not a Cerbera - surely they should do 130k+

Have you noticed the mileage on your typical £6k M5?

IMO you can give a saloon a fancy name if you want to but at the end of the day it's just another expensive saloon with a big engine and high running costs.
What are the other options for a 5 seater V8 MANUAL.

I can't think of any, most of the competition are Auto only.
