DVLA in 'something right' shocker

My photocard licence expires next month, so I set about sorting out the replacement yesterday. I was all ready to go and get my photo taken, dig out my chequebook (I'm sure I have one somewhere) and stick the stuff in the post. However, on the form, I spotted that it could also be done online... Hmm.
So I log on and create a profile on the site. I wonder how they'll deal with the photo issue as somehow they need a picture that actually looks like me, rather than how I looked a decade ago. The site asked for certain info, presumably to check I'm me. National Insurance number, paper counterpart number, photocard number and....passport. As my passport is only a couple of years old, they're going to use the photo they already have on it! Genius! Finally some 'joined up thinking' from Government departments. I paid online with my card, cut the old licence up as requested and stuck it in the post back to the DVLA.
It's refreshing to see a system that actually works, and that uses common sense rather than making me take another new photo. My only question is whether the licence will come back with an expiry in 7 years rather than another 10 - which is possible. However, I'll need to renew the passport then anyway, so doing both at the same time will save me hassle in the future as they'll just continue to use the new photo for both documents.
Still cost me £20 though.
