Hello All

I have just bought a new (used) car and the car came with private plates.

Agreed to retain the plates in his name and I am filling out the V317.

The V317 states I must also send back a V62, but given I will be including the V5 anyway (requesting change of owner), do I really need to send back a V62? I suspect not.

You shoudnt be sending back the v5 the seller should be doing that
You should only have the tiny slip
You send the V317 assigning the plates to him and a v62 to get the original reg back
Assuming you have the right form numbers there. Sounds right but I havent checked
Now I am confused

When I spoke to the DVLA they told me that I fill out the V317, send back the MOT and V5 document, cheque for £105. The plate would be retained for the old owner and they would issue me a new V5/MOT/Tax disc in the new reg number. Sounds like this is wrong frown (Arghh hate the DVLA!)

The V62 is an application for a vehicle registration certificate.

STOP!!!!!!!!!

Original owner must undertake retention BEFORE transferring ownership (shouldnt really have sold car till complete),into your name or your gonaa have one big fk up

Get the number retained and new reg doc in age related plate issued before sending of and becoming new keeper
Why is this such a problem? (Genuine question, not being an arse)

DVLA said it was OK (and sounds like they may have a new process that allows everything to be done in one go), the V317 allows the reg to be "gifted" and I get the details back for the new plate.

Thanks for trying folks!

Was hoping to get it out before the last post yesterday but no such luck, so will call the DVLA again to confirm the very latest processes and get it sent straight out.

Will let you know if it helps resolve any disputes? wink

Have you got a brand new logbook v5C or has the seller given you the old one?
He might want it back to send off to DVLA but as I said there was a thread a week or so ago where the logbook was sent off with the V317 in one go ( I think).
I have the old one, the latter situation about sending old v5 with V317 is what the lady at the DVLA said to do when I called earlier this week but going to call back to be 100% sure given the confusion that seems to surround this process.

YOu have to sign the V317 as the current keeper and the seller as the person who wants the plate.
Exactly what I have done biggrin and they want to keep the plate on retention (£105 fee already taken off cars price, plus more for new plates, insurance change e.t.c)

Can't remember who said what (sorry), but called yesterday and had the same story twice now from the DVLA.

V317
V5 - full slip
MOT
£105 cheque

V62 is not required

Send to local DVLA office and wait.

That's what's been said in recent threads
Did they mind at all that you were sending in the log book rather than the seller? It may be that as long as the seller makes sure someone sends it in theyre ok
They didn't even flinch, just said do these steps and we will give you a new reg and the seller his private plate back.

Update: V5 received with new plate listed, new reg plate details confirmed but they got the retention document and put it in my name.

Have been asked to send back the form with a note to the DVLA and it should all be sorted.
