McLaren upgrades MP4-12C to 625hp

McLaren distracts from niggles with a free power boost alongside nav upgrade

McLaren is due to launch an upgraded version of its MP4-12C later this year, with power pushed up by 25hp to 625hp, though the engine re-map won't affect the car's economy or emissions figures.

The news has been revealed in a letter from company MD Antony Sheriff to existing owners, offering a free power upgrade for their cars. While McLaren is at it, it will also add a few features to the car, including a remote-opening passenger door and tweaks to the sound system.

This is of course the second time that McLaren has twiddled with the 12C, the first one being to add a bit of extra 'passion' to the car.

The latest upgrade will be available from October 2012 and, for those getting it retro-fitted, Sheriff says coyly that "in order to minimise the time you spend apart from your 12C, we plan to deliver this upgrade package at the same time as we update your IRIS system". For that, read 'we will actually make the sat-nav work...'.

McLaren won't tell us anything more about the changes yet, but promises that full details of the upgrades will be coming soon.

Actually the IRIS upgrade is to install the "Ron Dennis" voice.

I head that one owner who got his car for free threw the keys back and told them to take this pile of junk away!
What an arrogant entitled prick.

And even though you HAVE explained it, I don't know where 12 is on their in-house performance scale. One above 11 I presume! wink
Don't even start on Zogs biggrin

This is the Ronmobile. McLaren Project 4 dash whatever. He gets a lot of stick, but I for one would love a car overseen by him. It's the OCD mobile, a living embodiment of his "if I see one exposed screw I'll kill you all" passion.

Never mind the engineering side of it, the idea that McLaren would 'just turn the boost up' shows a real lack of understanding of the Woking ethos.
