Years past I was selling a four year old MK2 Golf GTD diesel in Auto Trader...I got a call from a guy saying he's looking for a Golf diesel for his sister and arranged to come see it, so guy arrives in a 944 and to say he's full of himself would be an understatement.

I pulled the car out the garage and he's all over it like a rash and I'am standing back trying not to listening to all his pish about whats wrong with my car (it was minted by the way) so I went to have a look at the 944 and spotted the Auto Trader in the passenger seat open at the diesel section with lots of cars (not Golfs) circled and clicked he's a trader...next he's wanting to go for a test drive so off we go he couldn't fault it then we started to discuss money, it was advertised for £6000 I offered £150 off he wanted the car for £4000 as this is all his sister had I said no way and headed back.

On returning I couldn't believe what he did he asked me over to his car and pulled a suitcase from inside and opened it up...it was full of cash...he started counting out some money I said hold it whats going on he said I'am getting you £4000 I said what part did you not understand that £4000 will not buy the car then I started getting all this crap from him about its not worth what I'am asking and his poor sister etc etc by this time I'd had enough and in a few short words asked him to leave...I have never had anyone try it on like that when selling my motors what a plonker.

Great stories guys...biggrin...I should have titled the thread as "Tales of buying and selling your car private" as I'am sure there are some good tales of buying too.

I tried to change the title but there is no option, can a moderator please do this.

Guys please post your buying stories too...beer

I like VW's and I was looking for a cheapish run about a few years ago...

In the local paper I saw a Polo and arranged to have a look, on arriving I was met by a heavily pregnant women who said we need a bigger car very soon as she was due anytime. The car was Tornado Red and properly faded but otherwise in sound condition it had next to no tax and three months MOT she advertised it for £3500 ono book price was nearly £4000...so cheekily I offered her £2750 and she replied I couldn't possibly take any less than £3000 for it...inside I was grinning like a Cheshire Cat and the deal was done.

I kept that car for three years...what a buy.

I was selling my MK2 Golf GTI at the tail end of the 80's it was in showroom condition teardrop alloys etc etc, ad placed in Auto Trader .

After a couple of days I got a phone call from a girl speaking broken English asking about the car and wanted to some see it so a time was arranged, young Chinese couple arrived the guy couldn't speak a word of English so his girl was doing all the talking they were two students at Dundee university and mum & dad were buying a car for their son.

I took the car out the garage and was greeted with silence they just stood looking at it (I could have sworn I heard the guys chin hit the ground) I asked if any thing was wrong they started to talking between themselves next thing the girl said its perfect how did I get it so shiny, they handed over the full asking price and were clearly very happy with their purchase.

After all the paperwork was filled in they spent ages asking me about all the products I used to clean and polish the car they were so polite and nice it was a pleasure dealing with them.
