I just picked up my new M135i which I ordered purely off the back of watching Chris Harris's video vs the RS3. I had never driven, heard or even seen one until I picked up my car but I'm pleased to say MY GOD was it the right decision!!

Every petrol head in the world needs to just once sit in one of these and hear this new 3.0 turbo unit with the sport button engaged. It is to my ears THE best sounding bmw road car ever produced. What an engine smile (oh and it came with an ok car too, bit ugly but nice place to sit).

When I owned my Golf mk5 r32 I said if it was 50hp faster and did 10mpg more it would be the best car I'd ever owned.

I realise now that all I missed from that was real wheel drive smile

Hmmm I actually didn't realise it had that. I thought you were joking originally. That will really offend me if it does do the fake m5 malarkey frown

I have been informed by my other half (who I told I was buying a sensible hatch back to save money) that 'it sounds rather noisy from the exhaust for a sensible car'

That can only be a good sign

Seriously?
Well it does also meet all the criteria I was looking for but ..well yes.

I heard him confirm it did actually do 38mpg on a run, heard and saw that is has a nice neutral ballance in the bends and saw, heard it being rung out to the redline and looking deeply satisfying whilst also out pacing the more powerful rs3. Thus proving it performs as well as the figures.

The price was just the clincher.

As the OP I must say I am offended by the fake sound thing.. I really didn't realise/it isn't nentioned anywhere obvious by bmw or in reviews/interviews with the bmw project leader.

Driving the car back in the rain with the windows up before I wrote that post I probably got the fullest effect of it frown

In my opinion I think a carefully marketed 'noise cancelling effect' would probably be a really good move in low model diesels. It would make it nicer to drive at no cost.. but on performance models, with proper engines WHY?

The 3.0 straight 6 Toyota supra never lacked in the sound department?!

I do have some comments to make though.

Obviously the title was tongue in cheek.

Yes I've owned many other M's and actually (ironically) I don't like the E46 csl because I think it sounds too digital. I think the single vanos 3.0 e36 was the best sounding of the n/a six cylinders. It just sounded more raw and angry, less controlled/metered.

The noise in the m135 cabin really is THAT good.. but finding out that it is enhanced does spoil the effect.

On ballance however I'm willing to forgive it as it's tight, fast, practical and comfortable. It may have top much grip and too little visibility but the suspension is the best I've experienced on anything since the era where they decided removing the suspension constitutes a sporty ride

p.s only just seen that last message, very informative thank you

I'm astounded with you suggesting the E46 M3 CSL sounds "digital".
Well I base this on my Z4mc with modified airbox, which sounded pretty much identical. The trouble is the first time it goes through the revs it sounds fantastic but 10, 000 miles later when its made exactly the same noise, perfectly with no variation at all. It starts to sound really flat and uninteresting. It was an outstanding peice of engineering but not characterful or alive like the old engine. It doesn't sound like something burning petrol, more like something processing it.
