Towing a vehicle

Okay so what is the best vehicle for towing a car trailer with a car such as a race car.

Smaller the better and legal. Been looking at pick up trucks which seems the way things are going, but are there any 4x4s capable or estates?

Ive seen the mitsi shogun but at 27mpg im not sure.

Anything up to 8k.

Will be an everyday vehicle also so not to keen on driving a transit everday, will still consider though.
