It's the diff/differential no need to say rear.

OK, I'll explain HAHA.

So you're buying/selling a diff, it's a BMW lets say doesn't matter.

Why put rear diff?

It's a differential for a 325i not a 325i ''rear diff'' - WHAT ELSE WOULD IT BE?

Hmmm.

Yes I know dear. lol

So you'd look at a 4wd car for parts for your 2wd would you?

Obviously you'll state for a 4wd car front or rear.

The point is when its 2wd.

Why specify rear/front?

So forgetting 4wd.

Rear lights - yes
Rear silencer - yes
Blah
Blah
Blah

Rear Diff - what else would it be?
Front Diff - what else would it be?

OK so I'll add 'when selling a differential' to the thread title.....sorry I assumed you'd get that bit! lol

Right so where were we, yes OK so you see a differential for a 330i for sale lets say.....(and yes there was a 330ix as well) but strictly 2wd is the point....

Why does the seller need to call it a rear diff?

You don't hear Jeremy Clarkson saying something like (and I'm not quoting it's just an example) '....and the F430's rear diff is amazing' in a car that is plainly known to be rear wheel drive do you?

There you go you see, no.

If you know what you're buying, what you're after, you'd just look for a Fender/Gibson/whatever model 'guitar' no one would question how many strings that's the point.

You might be looking for a Strat and then see they did a seven string one in the 80's or the Squier 7 string one more recenlty

But then are you saying if you're looking for a diff for a 330i you'd be tempted to try a diff from another car?

Course not hence no need to say front or rear, simply the car name it came from is sufficient.

a mid engined car would have a front bonnet and a rear bonnet (or engine cover) though

also that same mid engined car say an mr2 turbo would have a rear diff (maybe mid diff.......) but as the engine was technically from a front engined car with so would that mid/rear diff be a front diff in a DIFFerent location.

I say stick to music mate
NO! it's just an MR2 diff, mate!
