Banging wheels
Discussion
I hate this, and yes i know i can control it by being gentle on the throttle but sometimes i dont expect it.
Fwd car, 240bhp going through the front wheels.
If the roads arent dry, the wheels have a tendancy to spin which doesent bother me at all, but i hate when they bang as they try to gain traction. Horrible noise/feeling, is there anything to limit it? It almost feels like the car comes off the ground and bangs back down, i know it doesent but thats the feeling.
Like i say the wheels spinning and eventually gripping traction doesent bother me as its not done often its usually unexpected, but the wheels banging is awful.
Also what kind of damage could it do to the car hypothetically.

Sounds like wheel hop/axle tramp. Could be the springs are too stiff or you’ve got a tired shock absorber, or both. On some cars fitting stiffer engine mounts can make a difference, worn bushes won’t help so check for those.
Just had an mot last week, would the shock absorber/bushes have shown up on it? Springs are aftermarket and made by eibach, very good springs, quite progressive and not much stiffer than factory.
Yeh i think it is wheel hop.
I did have traction control in 'sport mode' at the time as i thought that would let the wheels spin more and reduce wheel hop.

You can try it as a test but I wouldn't drive it like that.
Why not, 32/30 isent that low to be honest so wouldent be dangerous.dhutch said:
OP, what's the car? Age? Mileage? Lowered? Dampers?
As said, it's what was called axle tramp imo. MOT should show worn bushes but might not, even less good at showing worn dampers.

Its a fiesta mk7 st.
3 years old.
30,000 miles on clock.
Lowered on eibach springs (common upgrade)
Shocks never changed but are fine with the above springs.

But are they fine? I fitted Eibach springs to my 200SX and they were both lowered and uprated. And the dampers couldn't cope.Shocks never changed but are fine with the above springs.
When springs are uprated it will be always harder for the dampers to control the oscillations.
BTW some people call dampers "shock absorbers" but it's the springs that actually absorb the shocks. The dampers are there to dampen down the movement of the springs. If you've ever followed an old shagged car with shot dampers you'll have seen the rear wheels bouncing up and down with high frequency. That's what a spring will naturally do when there is no damping at all.
Some people say it can't be down to the dampers as their car has done it from new. I just say the accountants spend more money on things that people can see (touch screens, bling rims, privacy glass) and less on things they can't (dampers).
Back in the day when I mucking about with Alfa's I never bothered "uprating" the springs. I got much better results but spending my money on decent dampers.

I had this when I remapped my old Focus ST, cured it by fitting an uprated gearbox torque mount. If it's not sorted you can damage the driveshafts.Fwd car, 240bhp going through the front wheels.

Lol at all the insults from some people, i havent said anything offensive ive asked for some advice and some people feel the need to insult to boost their own ego, quite pathetic really for a forum full of supposedly 'adults'.

Right little lady: put your handbag away, throttle control is where it's at. Or are you having to much fun in the retail car park?
Throttle control doesn't fix the issue it just avoids it.My car hops sometimes, but only at 5k+ rpm during a WOT pull in 1st. It's fine up to 5k, and if I ease off slightly it won't do it at all.
