So I just watched this clip:

https://youtu.be/a2qxaUyJj1E

..and it got me wondering, can you go faster than an M5 for under £25k and would you want to?

To clarify the last statement I mean if you buy a Ford mondeo and tune it to 900hp is it really going to cost less than the F10 M5 over 12months and 10,000 miles of running? My own experiences of highly modified cars suggest not.

I imagine a finance companies algorithm would agree.

K series Caterham Superlights are fast and probably within budget.

I would take the Caterham for a track only car any day and will definitely be quicker after 3 laps when the M5's brakes are on fire but for outright pace, based on this comparison (2 min onwards) with the M1 (which I suspect would have been last in that Autocar drag race)

I'm not sure.

V10 RS6 and a remap?
As nice as the V10 sounds I don't think it would be enough against an F10 M5. You'll want something with forced induction I think, bigger gains.

Could you supercharge a C63 reliably?
The 2 turbos on the V10 rs6 help.

Googling these suggestions is a great waste of an afternoon but sadly M5 still king of the hill so far.

Drop a couple of wheels and you could do it for £5k easily...
Ok. That can't be argued. Can't say it's an equivalent mode of transport but faster, more thrilling.. ok you win on that one.

This is by far my favourite suggestion so far smile

I agree the practical answer is probably a 20k Mercedes v12 turbo mapped (if it'll put enough power down) or the RS6 mapped. My money would still be on the M5 of those for the lowest running costs over the next 12 months/10000 miles.

LS powered RX7 I think is an excellent suggestion too.

The TT RS/Golf R argument.. I think you're underestimating how expensive it is to get that kind of performance and how fast a mapped M135i is. My old Stage 2+ S3 daily driver with 367hp & 416lb/ft of torque cost me around 6.5-7k to get to that power and was faster than a standard M140i but not by a big margin.. not more than a couple of car lengths over that distance and the difference in that initial video to the m5 is staggering.

Some TT RS running big power, but then again these aren't that cheap to buy. Not much under £25k.

Pretty hard challenge really without going full turbo nutter tuner car.

This has 730hp apparently for £20k - should do it:

https://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/201...

But agree with J4CKO, remapped Bentley Continental got to be easy 700-750 which should do it.
I feel very suspicious this would fail the costing the same over the next 12 months or 10,000 miles part of the challenge.

Also, no direct inside knowledge on that Cerbera drag run but last time this came up on the forum I remember someone saying it was standard except a decat. My 4.2 AJP was fast.. really fast over 70mph. Under 70mph it was so hard not to let the wheels spin and then even harder to stop them spinning and get back on the throttle
