Two young Albanian lads launched their car off a speed bump crashing into my car (parked in front of the house) and then my garden wall. They did a runner with the bags of white powder they had in the glove box. They weren't wearing seat belts, so looked pretty sorry for themselves.

Left their wallet and asylum seeker ID in the vehicle (and a sample of the product), it shows up as insured but probably a rental?

My car is a 2006 E92 330i with only 63k miles, if anyone has any advice or adverts they can share to get a fair claim value.

My car

Their car

Advice, sympathy and vitriol all welcome.

That trail of fluid leading to the crash site suggests a proper launch but poor landing off the speed bump.
Yeah, looking at the marks on the road they got a good 15-20ft of air and took out the sump before the collision.

This is a 20mph residential street and I live directly opposite a primary school.

We were just putting our shoes on to head out for dinner when the crash happened. A minute or two earlier and it could have been quite different.

Well, car is written off, now with copart for market value estimate.

Hopefully I can dispute the initial offer with some examples of similar vehicles from the different car buying sites.

The only cars I can find with the same or similar mileage are going for more than I bought the car for, but obviously less than it will cost to replace.

It's still going to cost me years of increased premiums and I was hoping to keep this car for a while having just dumped over a grand into repairs.

OP, who are you insured with? I had something similar about ten years ago, I was with AXA and they hounded them for years and I got back my excess eventually.
Insured with AXA for the car through the AA as a broker. Hopefully they track them down, they left their ID so not hard to locate. But I'm not super hopeful about what happens next.

If it is a hire car then is that not just a simple claim against the hire company? It's then entirely their issue if they wish to chase their customers who will no doubt claim they were nowhere near at the time and that someone else must have taken the car.
The exact phrase used, was the car was owned by a company, but no further details given.

In this circumstance, I think it's considered an absent driver, since they absconded. I don't know if insurers dispute liability in this circumstance, as the insurance is invalidated by an uninsured driver.

Because of this uncertainty I decided to decline the offer of a credit hire vehicle. I couldn't face the anxiety of it coming back to me if they couldn't recover costs from the other party.

I live in a city and can get to work on the train. So going without a car until this is sorted isn't any real inconvenience.

AXA / Copart made a generous offer when they wanted to write-off my S-Max after a minor bump.
Thanks that's reassuring. Looking online and having spoken to a few different valuation services the car value seems to vary between £1970 on parkers, £3323 from Motorway, £4500 from a dealer and Autotrader has nothing similar below £4800 with the closest in age and mileage coming in at £5600 on eBay.

Expecting the worst, hoping for the best, still sad about the car, it didn't deserve this.

Received the first offer from copart at £4575, which I have rejected to see if they're willing to move higher.

It's a bit lower than I would be able to replace the vehicle for with something of a similar age and condition. So starting to prepare adverts of vehicles to go back to them with.

  • UPDATE:*
Copart accepted the evidence of other similar vehicles provided and increased their offer by 30% which is a good outcome.

Car gets collected next week and I can start car shopping.

Did the police catch the person responsible or was there a lack of evidence despite them leaving their refugee ID and no doubt DNA all over the airbag?
No idea just yet. Sent off the written statement to the police yesterday along with photographs of the driver and passenger.

You would hope with all that evidence that they will get caught, but I don't hold up too much hope.

I was a bit appalled to find out some insurers consider you to be at fault if they can't reclaim costs from the other party. Which seems outrageous. My insurance quotes have all tripled 🥺
